Toxic Tuesday Two-fer: TV Theme Division

Posted over 2 years ago

Channel-surfing the other day, I came across a horrific artifact of the distant past - from way back in the sucky '70s. It was the opening to that lame and leaden family sitcom "The Brady Bunch," complete with weak and whiny theme song. It entered the cultural zeitgeist alongside that equally crummy but more muzak-oriented TV comedy series about a brood burdened by smirky, precocious kiddies, "The Partridge Family" - another stomach-turner of a program.

"The Partridge Family" - about the adventures of a bland pop band comprised of the Partridge mom and her annoying children - is guiltier of producing more musical toxicity than "The Brady Bunch." I believe that the latter show did spawn a few forays into recorded slop by its young actors and actresses, although not as high-profile and successful as the feeble audio output from of "The Partridge Family," but you need only get an earful of the two shows' themes to know that all of it is Must-Not-Hear-or-See TV.

Tune in, or change the channel. But remember what they used to say: TV will rot your mind.

I can't believe I'm about to defend the Brady Bunch!  But in terms of a successful theme song, I'd have to say it does it's job - amazingly.  One can watch the begining of the show and from the theme song alone, get the full back story needed to "enjoy" the show.  Like a successful jingle, it just works.  Granted this isnt mensa television, but it does it's job, grating as it may be.

Prior to this post, all I'd ever heard about The Brady Brunch came from Screeching Weasel:

'The Partridge Family' theme starts like a possible 'I'm Into Something Good' rip-off, and holy shit, do things plummet from there. Serious toxicity.

c.b.w.: Granted. It does work in terms of context, back-story and earwormy jingle. But "grating" puts it kindly.

The Brady Bunch had it's time in my childhood, & I think I'll leave there. Never could get intoThe Partridge Family.

Aiea: That may have been where the madness began - and remember, it was based on a true story. (Where have I heard that before?)

Rawk: Austin Powers has nothin' on you, pal.

    Spike: I feel your pain.

RGM: You didn't pass the physical?

    Toxic stamp of disapproval!!

As long as were talkin' about themes from yute oriented shows, I'm going with the glass half full approach

Didn't David Cassidy come out of The Partridge Family? See, every cloud has a silver lining.
