WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Stranger Coverage

Posted about 1 year ago

My unabashed affection for Canadian singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright (of the musical Wainwright-McGarrigle clan) has already been documented here and there in the MOG-iverse. Yet I haven't taken space on my own page to review her second album, the exquisite (and piquantly titled) I Know You're Married But I Have Feelings Too, despite the fact that I've been listening to it day after day since it was released in early June.

As I said in the thread that spun out of Joxley's sharp and fair review of the album (http://mog.com/Joxley/blog_post/172109), I Know You're Married… has been one of my favorites of the year so far, but I've been so crazy about the recording that I couldn't bring myself to write a reasoned appraisal of it.

Instead, I figured I'd just post the bonus track (not available on all iterations), Martha's seductively rockin' cover of Eurythmics' super-sexy techno-torchsong "Love Is a Stranger," and leave it at that.

You may not trump the Annie Lennox-Dave Stewart original (and that Eurythmics video of "Love Is a Stranger" is one of the all-times), but I love you anyway, Martha…

I was at Streetlight Music in SF a month ago or so & heard a song they were playing over their system and HAD to ask who it was since it sounded so familiar to me. Turns out it was Martha but her voice reminds me so much of Lou Rhodes of the late, great Lamb, who now has gone solo(I thought for sure it was off Lou's latest which I didn't have at the time). That's a huge compliment to Martha in my book since Lou has an incredible voice.

"They Say" live from her new album "Bloom"(no info as to venue or time on Utube):

August: Good one! Lou deserves some attention, too. Lamb never got its due. Maybe Lou's solo career will gain some traction.

Joxley: Agreed, Agent J. I'd say that Martha has a license to thrill.

Anna: Do you think so? Hmmm. (Last week, one of my pals pointed out how much Ms. Wainwright resembles an ex-girlfriend of mine. I was chastened; then, I explained that I might still be with the woman if she could write and sing like Martha.)

    ivylander: Big time!

Lester: You and me both, sir. M-m-m-m good!

Lizzie: You may very well thank us. And check out her video for "When the Day Is Short" and her live performance of the song on Letterman. Both are YouTube-able.

Rawkkiddoh: Not at all, Kevin. Different strokes...

downhome: "They" are quick to judge, aren't they? You're welcome.

Hi Mikey - Martha is very worthwhile of a crush. She's been getting lots of airplay on the alt-hipster's radio stations in this neck o' the woods. I haven't gotten to know her songs exactly yet, so everytime they come on I know I like them, but can't remember who it is. Then they back announce and I'm like "D'oh! Oh course, it's Martha Wainwright." She's got a lot of things happening in her voice. A little country cry; a little 80s pop squeak and much more.

    Yeah, she's hot. ;-)

Funny how we rarely write about our true loves here, huh?

So, you ARE a legs man. Now we know, but the red button went kaput for me. Damned MOG.

L.M.I.: Hot - and smart and talented. It's the trifecta!

Michelle: Try the button again. It's working at this end. And, with apologies to Z.Z. Top, yes, she's got legs, and she knows how to use them.

I love her voice on this cover, it's a great version. I really liked her first album. You know when you feel that somebody's singing a song directly to you? I felt that with Bloody Motherfucking Asshole. ;)

Love is a stranger is alright, but what really sank in was the "They Say" video in Augusts1's post.  That was beautiful.  A gem.
