Hello? Hello? Is This Thing On?

Posted about 4 years ago
Well, I finally feel comfortable coming back to MOG after the Great Down-for-Maintenance Scare of 2008. Posts were lost! Messages disappeared! No MOGging for hours upon hours! Frankly, it was scary. It just reasserted how attached I’ve become to the site and its denizens. Where would I go if MOG disappeared for more than a quick blip, brain-lock, or visit with Schloopy? (Where has that little furball been anyway?)I’ve come to rely on so many of you music lovers beating the bulrushes for the newest, the next and the best. When it comes to the cutting-edge sounds, MOGgers seem to get there first, while the rest of the culture can only hear the echoes of our finds, weeks or months later. And we mustn’t forget the mighty MOG archivists who dredge up and give new life to the classics, the rare, and the arcane. The other day I was hankering for even a little bit of MOG, to no avail. But the tech gods have smiled on us again, and we have more than a little bit at out disposal. Which reminds me…Next Sunday, I’m going to see ethereal Swedish dance-pop chanteuse Lykke Li – whose endearing and infectious track “Little Bit” first won my heart - on a bill with her lo-fi pop countrywoman Sarah Assbring a.k.a El Perro del Mar at the elegant, venerated San Francisco nightspot Bimbo’s 365 Club. How did I know about the almost-otherworldly Lykke months before any American release of her music? Need you ask?Sure, some of her music is gonna turn up in adverts and crappy youth-oriented TV dramas. Hell, it’s already happening to British dance-poppers the Ting Tings. But for now, Lykke Li is still ours at MOG. And if that sounds elitist, so be it.

  1. Joxley says Hey, the main advantage of being the elite is that we can be elitist...

  2. Spike says I like her recording, her sweet understated voice and also how the video camera doesn't move except to roll slowly backwards, which helps keep things together and stable. This is Lykke Li's fourteenth Mog post.

  3. indiepixie says dude she is soo much better than the ting tings. i resent that slight.

  4. Mike the Knife says Joxley: Amen to that, squire! Spike: Clearly, we love her here. But this was more a what-the-hell/glad-we're-back post and an illustration of THE POWER OF MOG!!! than a valentine to Ms. Li. indiepixie: An imagined slight, to be sure. But it's sweet that you're defending her. And you wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the Ting Tings if you were as hyp-no-tized as I am by "Great DJ." I woke up humming it today. No lie.

  5. indiepixie says hmmm ok i saw them live at SXSW after probably the 19th time they had played...and they were dragging. maybe i am a harsh critic ;)

  6. Mike the Knife says Or maybe they're just a studio outfit. No shame in that.

  7. Charley Rogulewski says put her in the category with Robyn and Duffy...this chicks are 2008's music queens

  8. Mike the Knife says D'accord, Charley!

  9. Zeroskilz says Moggers are great about staying on top of the old and new. I never knew as much about new music as when I was Mogging regularly. Probably a strong argument for stopping by more often.

  10. Lizziegreeneyes says Reading you loud and clear Mr. Cutlery !!! Clear as a bell - or should I say Belle in Lykke Li... I am with you on the Ting Tings... fun tunes & there is no shame in being a studio band... but I will be seeing them live in Sept & will save my verdict til then !!!

  11. Mike the Knife says Zeroskilz: Drop by any old time, and you know you'll be rewarded. Lizziegreeneyes: I await your report, LGE. The t'ing is that I might be burnt out on them if I keep listening to them as much as I have. That said...Ting Tings mash-up in the pipeline!!!

  12. Lizziegreeneyes says That's the kinda pipeline I'd ride m'good man...

  13. Bartleby says The skittering grooves of "Little Bit" provided me with tittering pleasures for a whole month after FluxC poured her sweet poisonous voice into my cochlea... But quite frankly it's getting a bit boring. (I prefer the thumping rumps of "Complaint Department")

  14. Sturgell says Lykke is going to be in town, eh? It was rough while we took a hit, but nice to come back to good fresh stuff. thanks Mike

  15. Anonymous says Bartleby: Gotta stop the tedium. Good thing Lykke dropped "Dance.Dance.Dance" on us, doncha think? Sturgell: Back on the beam! See you at Bimbo's?

  16. Anonymous says I'm sure there's a good Oscar Wilde quote about the benefits and fun of being elite and elitest, but my small brain defeats me. But this one is appropriate: I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself. And in the case of Lykke Li, he's absolutely right. Miss Li has been in regular rotation at Castle Ingham ever since hearing her on these very MOG pages. I'm finding The Ting Tings - first heard about and heard (yes) on these pages a year ago - a grower. They were on Jonathan Ross a couple of weeks ago and did a performance of 'That's Not My Name' that was just wonderful - a real band instead of a novelty. That said, 'Name' could be the novelty hit of the summer, perfect for sunny afternoons and large gins.

  17. Anonymous says Ah, Jonh, me lad! Ever the voice of authority - dappled with a bit of sanity and levity. As threatened above in this very thread, be on the lookout for an insidious mash-up built upon the Ting Tings' "Great DJ."

  18. Anonymous says Mike, I've found that since I've been on Mog my Spin magazine subscription has literally become obsolete! I'm finding out about new bands long before they hit the mags which is very cool. I keep hearing about Lykke Li on Mog & I listen/watch the vids/songs and she's ok but for some reason she hasn't really stuck. Not sure exactly why that is. Perhaps it's cause I'm listening to so much other music that if something doesn't really strike me immediately it won't fly. Oh well, I guess it's the plight of an OCD music appreciator, heh.

  19. Anonymous says August: It's a big wide world of sound out there, isn't it? I try to snarf up all I can, and when it tastes good to me, I spoon out some more. If not, there's usually something else on the menu to sample.

  21. Anonymous says The Tings Tings; 'That's Not My Name' finely got a full UK release this week and the mid-weeks say it's heading for a top 5 chart position!!! As for the Scandinavian girls, I really enjoyed Ida Marie when I saw her a couple of weeks ago and I've also got a tiny bit of love for Robyn; . . . ..sorry, I'll switch the lights off on my way out.

  22. Mike the Knife says Neill: You are ever vigilant! Thanks for the update and for reminding me about another of your finds: Ida Maria. And leave the lights on. I tend to get back late.
