HITTING YOU WITH OUR RHYTHM STICK

It’s Friday, and I Just Wanna…

Dance. Dance. Dance.

And not to any old beat

Ever notice how idea-free and lyrically simplistic most super-hot, fail-safe get-'em-moving dance tracks are? I mean, you can hardly help yourself from rump-shaking to C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," but seriously, it's just a series of short, obvious exhortations to a killer beat sequence.

That's one of the reasons I revere the wit of George Clinton's "Atomic Dog" and the intellect and poetry of Talking Heads' "Girlfriend is Better." Smart, funny - and you can dance to them. Speaking of the Talking Heads track, here's the smokin' version from director Jonathan Demme's documentary of their 1983 "Stop Making Sense" tour - still one of the greatest concert films ever.

Go ahead and gyrate. The weekend is here!

    A classic.

I still recall seeing them circa 1978 or 1979 at a small club (less than 400 people) when the stage was so cramped I thought David Byrne would trip over something when he started running in circles around the rest of the band (and equipment). He came close once but didn't let it phase him.

Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth live just a couple of miles away and still play in the area every so often- and the Tom Tom Club was fun- but I miss the magic they created together with David Byrne.

It's funny.   I had this post open, ready to read but only read the Subject line.  My wife (who could give two you-know-whats about MOG) getes on the computer, reads the post and is now blasting Talking Heads throughout our house.

Our one year old is needs to go to bed but we're dancing, giving two very little you-know-whats about 7:00.

great choice mike.  you may not have both your wheels spinning yet, but you can still shake it up!  way to avoid the obvious and stay in the groove.

Fasted: Ah, "The Genius of Love." A staple. Talented people, and from my experience, nice people, too.

    cardmagic: In a word...

    dmdm: Different strokes?

Eric5776: The power of great music exerts itself again. Just a matter of time before the little one is joining in the dance.

Robin: Oh, it's coming. Was out without the cane last night. Could the samba be far off?

cpetersonart3: I dunno. There's still plenty of bango rattling the clubs - and someone's making it.

    inrumford: So very true.

fun song! couldn't help but dance in my chair watching the video.

I know shoulder pads were big in the 80s; but, come on, those are ridiculous!

Fun? You bet, trend! And I have a feeling that Byrne's jacket dimensions were just a leetle bit exaggerated...

I ADORE 'Stop Making Sense'! I saw it in the theater when it came out probably a good 3-4 times. Byrne was so innovative & The Heads were incredible.

I went to two of these shows - fascinating to watch how it was filmed. Must have been 10 or 12 cameras. Demme had a table set up in the middle of the room with monitor feeds from each camera and directed them from there. It was originally meant to be a 30 minute film, but after the first night it became apparent, as a friend at Warners said, "the meter's been turned off." Damned glad they did; such a great record of a highly original band. If it's still on YT, worth finding the Italian TV clips of them live -- really playing their asses off.
