Mash or Mish-Mash?

Posted about 1 year ago
  • Artist:
    Metallica vs Coldplay
  • Track:
    Until It Talks
That’s right. Mish-mash. And I’m not drogging, as in MOGging after a few too many. There’s a question that I have to ask myself with each crazy combo of tunes that I come across: Is it a mash-up to be cherished – or just a mishap, a mish-mash, a mess?Pop culture, blended for your consumption!I know that a number of you out there are less than friendly to certain artists and songs that can still make for spiffy mash-ups. For instance, there’s so much enmity towards the incredibly popular British art-rock band Coldplay that I find it quite astounding. And a few of their songs have contributed to some of my all-time favorite mashes, such as Mark “Go Home Production” Vidler’s brill “Papa Was a Clock,” seamlessly mixing the Temptations’ Motown opus “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” with Coldplay’s plaintive “Clocks.” And I’m certain that the post-punk metallurgists in Metallica have their share of deriders – be it for their aggressive, occasionally abrasive, sometimes grandiose music, or their repressive attitude towards file-sharing fans. But work with me here. What delights might be found in a grafting of James Hetfield’s vocal from Metallica’s ”Until It Sleeps” to the “Thin White Duke Remix” of Coldplay’s “Talk,” all courtesy of Stockholm, Sweden mash-masters Divide & Kreate? Want an answer? Press and play “Until It Talks” – and pulsate.

  2. Augusts1 says Jammin' mash Mike! I'm not familiar w/either song but the mashup is great. Coldplay is a guilty pleasure, love to hate/love them group. They write great songs but they are so top 40 poppy it's hard to get behind them 100%. But one of my favorite artists Aimee Mann did a wonderful cover of their song "The Scientist" a few years back(included in the bonus edition of "Lost In Space") that I absolutely love(& I liked the original too) that kind of gave me a different perspective on Coldplay's talent. Here's the song if you've not heard it(although being the music maven that you are I'm sure you have heard it): And Hetfield has such an interesting voice.

  3. Mike the Knife says Lyrikhan: One can only hope... August: I happen to enjoy Mr. Martin and his band, as well as numerous Metallica tracks, so this was a no-brainer for me. But damn! That Aimee cover is a good'un. Almost forgot it.

  4. Augusts1 says I saw her perform it live a year or so before she recorded it and was hooked then!

  5. Sturgell says no offense Mike, when i saw Metallica vs Coldplay well I was a little weary. BUT! After listening to it, for a little while I found the subtle yeilding magic of Mike's mixer.

  6. Mike the Knife says August: Yup. Aimee's a treasure. Sturgell: No offense taken, brother. Your initial reaction is just what I was talkin' about. And your eventual reaction...understandable.

  7. Jonh Ingham says This is the 2d Divide & Kreate you've posted that sounds clever, infectious and delightful. If I hadn't read the artists involved I would have no idea this a mash. Coldplay bores me, though I'm interested to hear what Eno's cooking up with them. On the other hand, Chris Martin is pretty cool. When the news came in that the last album had debuted at Number One in about 15 countries, he bought everyone in the pub a round. On a major Radio 1 interview he suddenly stopped answering questions with the words, "Enough. People are sick of hearing my voice. I'm sick of hearing my voice." He then agreed to sing any song in the Top Ten that the DJ chose. He ended up singing about 4 of them quite credibly. So not too self-absorbed.

  8. Shud33 says Mike where do you find these? That was awesome! Hey, so I have been meaning to get on here to see any posts on the bay area meet. How did it go?

  9. Neill says I love the mash ups you post here Mike. I genuinely look forward to hearing them and only wish you posted them on a site where we all could 'get' them. ;) As for Coldplay; success breeds contempt, especially here in the UK, but I've always stopped and watched them at festivals, even if they are very polished and professional....

  10. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I think it's a good mix. What do you know about those crazy swedes?

  11. Mike the Knife says Jonh: D & K are very accomplished. I parcel out the mixes by the DJs and producers that I like the most, but there are usually many more to be heard - usually in the club. Even though I like Coldplay considerably more that you do, we both agree that Martin seems like a good guy. You need only see him send up his supposed pretension and self-aggrandizing nature during that episode on the second series of "Extras" to know that he's got his head on straight. Shud33: I travel through cyber-space, slip between the 1s and 0s, download, upload, beat the bullrushes, and excavate ancient files until I come upon the perfect mash-up to offer the MOG-iverse at large. We missed you, but the S.F. MOG Meet was jolly good fun, as recounted here: http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/152986 Neill: Happy to oblige. If you like, you can MOG-mail me to get specific mash-ups sent to your own in-box - or check into the Bootie Top 10 and snap up downloadable tracks at http://bootiesf.com Me and the Horse I Rode In On: All's I know is that D & K do a bang-up job. Again, Scandinavia. Is it the aquavit?

  12. Hermes says Uhhh, I like that track. I have a slight youth trauma with Metallica, but in this un-metallic version, they sound pretty nice. I have no problem with Coldplay, as I hardly know anything of them .. to known to be interesting for me. Hah, isn't that true ignorance?

  13. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Akvavit.................I would hate to think so. The swedes are just so damn talented. The danes are just lucky.

  14. Mike the Knife says Hermes: Hell, I used to hate brussels sprouts until I got older and my tastes became more refined. Me and the Horse I Rode In On: Luck. Talent. I'll take both...

  16. Mike the Knife says wassonii: Give in to the magic of mash, my friend...

  18. Spike says I liked that a lot. The elements are outside my realm, so I miss their associations. The drums punctuate the change in how the ever-flowing keyboard chords or intervals are directed to different notes. It's a new sound for me.

  19. Mike the Knife says wassonii: Jawohl! Spike: So you can simply take it on its own terms, with no preconceptions about the pieces. Interesting test case...
