    Walking In The Rain
It was drizzly last night in the City by the Bay, but it wasn’t enough to put a damper on the first San Francisco MOG Meet (not counting a little nightclub par-tay that featured a performance by members of a certain renowned New Orleans musical group).Cheers from annieander, david hyman and 1234chainsaw.Zeitgeist, a convivial Mission District bar with a punk-rock/biker vibe, hosted a gathering of ten dedicated MOGgers – some from the site’s Berkeley headquarters (the MOGfather himself David Hyman, Sturgell, brittanybf, T.J., and dangerdot) and others from hither, thither and yon (me, 1234chainsaw, mollifire, annieander, and Spike). It was a distinct pleasure hanging out with the lot of them.Beer flowed like…beer. Conversation was stimulating when it could be heard over the loud (and lively) music clanging out of the Zeitgeist P.A. The weather was only a bother to me, since I travel on two wheels and was slightly encumbered by my rain gear.brittanybf, Sturgell, dangerdot, Spike & mollifire are in the House.I found out many valuable bits of info, including the fact that Pekka (1234chainsaw) and I both learned to read by deciphering Donald Duck comic books when we were children; that Hyman much prefers Daffy Duck to Donald; and that mollifire is an ace when it comes to the care and navigation of sound systems. I discovered that Spike is an artist who works in collage; that T.J. and I are both close to the renowned soul, blues and jazz archivist Harry D; that annieander’s son is devoted to the science-fantasy game Warhammer; and that dangerdot has been deep inside the Hollywood entertainment machine (as in, the music and film business) and survived to tell the tale.It was revealed that Sturgell, mollifire and I are all fans of the rollicking British sci-fi TV series “Doctor Who,” and we may very well catch the start of the new season together; and that annieander and I are very concerned with the current state of public education in the U.S., and would like to actually do something about it. And it was confirmed that brittanybf and I are greatly amused by “bear culture” (and, if you scroll down her MOG page, you’ll get what’s tickling us).Mike the Knife, Sturgell & brittanybf, front and center, with T.J. and Hyman behind.Renowned MOGgers – including Anna, Joxley, Jonh Ingham, indiepixie, Cody B, LadyC, ROCKNROLLPIMP, Shud33 (who would have been present had she not been performing with her band in Sacramento), and many more - were invoked and toasted in their absence. And, of course, the late Crash Pryor – the MOGmeister who left this plane of being way before his time - was remembered with fondness.MOG represents at Zeitgeist. The rain let up, and we adjourned to the bar’s back patio for a bit - until the drink began to take its toll, and hunger set in. We said our goodbyes, and parted company. Pekka and I ambled over to Taqueria Pancho Villa for burritos, joined briefly by mollifire and dangerdot. Someone suggested that we should do this gathering thing on a regular basis. Maybe we will. Since Pekka’s relocating to England in a month, he’ll have to reconnect with the Euro-MOGgers for his next meet. No matter. We’ll see him on the posts and in the threads.

  2. ivylander says What a handsome and distinguished (if moderately damp-looking) assemblage. Did you hear our glasses clinking in your honor on the other coast?

  3. annieander says Of course Bill...everyone was represented...if not in spirit. And to think I almost chickened out, that I almost didn't go...That's just stinkin' thinkin'

  6. bloodtea says Oh.. if only San Francisco was just around the corner ::sigh:: Btw, I like that third pic (sheesh, talk about happiness...) as much as I'm diggin' this tune.

  7. Mike the Knife says annieander: Aw, thanks! Pot? Luck? Hmmm... ivylander: I wondered what that shattering noise was. Now, I know. Appreciated, ivy. Wish you had been on hand, too. Happily, we've all mopped up and dried off. Spike: Great to have you on board! We shall cogitate, check through the schedules, and see what we can manage. milkshake: It was certainly fun, although a video feed to the East Coast, the U.K., Europa and the Mediterranean might have enhanced things even more. bloodtea It goes to show what a fine Belgian ale can accomplish. ;-) And, as soon as we get that "Star Trek" transporter technology off the ground, we'll expect to see you here, too.

The fam and I would be there in a heart beat! Love S.F. :) Sounds like fun, and those S.F. Mog meets are like the Mecca of mog meets, some day folks, some day...Looked like fun!

I'm sure there will be more in store, so stay tuned. contrabandwidth: Again, Happy MOG -iversary! If only we had known you were free last night...As if! Anyway, S.F. loves u 2. C u when we c u... Cody B: Shoes? Shoes? We don't need no shoes. It's San Fran, where the hippies go barefoot in the Haight and Golden Gate Park. Looking good? Looking good? I think it must be the rosy glow of the fortified brewskis. Bottom line: A splendid time was had by all...

  15. Dale says I'm so glad you guys were able to pull it together. This is just more proof that music lovers really are the best people. I'm especially glad you guys got it together before Pekka left the States. I am SOOOOOO looking forward to the Coachella MOG meetup; I foresee many much good times ahead. Oh Mike, and the transit by bike ... nice! I so need to get my bike fixed.

  16. Mike the Knife says Dale: It was very reassuring to be amongst such nice and savvy peeps. I'm sure your Coachella experience will be more than comparable - with the addition of high temperatures and a zillion hot acts. BTW, I don't know what you ride, but I've been rockin' the same Yamaha 200cc city trawler for years.

  18. ladyIoanna says great event! i wish we could be there in body and not only in spirit...Mike , i hope the star trek transporter technology gets off the ground really soon, so more people, me included, could meet in future mog-versary..wish many good years to come for mog and the moggers all around the world.. Wish we could organize something like that in greece also, now in summer, or any other summer..in santorini maybe, we could make a mog-week.. it's a good proposition, no?

  19. vannatta says So many of my friends that live out that way ... (north and south) keep saying - "Come out to the correct coast Van" this is where you belong - and (sigh) just more evidence as fuel for the fire... thanks Mike, for allowing the rest of us to not only be there in spirit, but to have experienced the _flavor... Cheers!

  21. Mike the Knife says Joxley: Actually, you were there in spirits, inspector... ladyIoanna: Grecian getaway? A dream proposition. From your keyboard to God's in-box, lady. All we need is a venture capitalist who sees the wisdom in strengthening our online community with more face-to-face encounters - and is willing to finance them. Gates? Jobs? Allen? Bueller? Anyone? vannatta: It was my honor to soak up the camaraderie and spread the news. And you are always welcome out here on the Left Coast. ROCKNROLLPIMP: Thus sayeth the PIMP. Duly noted, and...RAWKIN' ON!

  22. B42 says Nice post Mike, the community within, looks like a fine time was had by all. Still wondering about the eventuality of a MogFest, east meets west and beyond :) No shoes :(

  23. 1234chainsaw says The sweetness of the meet was cut only by its shortness; so many things musical and otherwise had to be left undiscussed. So, although I'm leaving for other pastures, I'll have all the more reason to make it back to SF on a regular basis.
    Permalink posted 03/30/2008
  24. Mike the Knife says B42: MogFest? You never know. Meanwhile, it happens every day at this very site. That'll have to do until the next get-together. 1234chainsaw: Point taken. How-do-you-dos and personal matters trumped the music end of things, although I did briefly discuss some DJ stuff with mollifire. Next time, we can get to the CD swap, list-making, and arguments...

  25. Hermes says Very nice post and song Mike. It looks like you indeed had a very good time. Now I feel even more physically disconnected as it becomes more and more evident that continental Europe is nearly a blank region in the MOG-o-sphere. That star-trek technology would be really great, a giver of venture capital even better.

  26. Charley Rogulewski says bummed i missed it. we should start these things in nyc.
    Permalink posted 03/30/2008
  27. Mike the Knife says Hermes: 'Twas tres cool. As regards Europa itself, there's SA, LadyC, bloodtea, and a few others in their various enclaves. It could be done at a pre-arranged location. Throw in the U.K. gang and the Mediterraneans, and you've got much more than a minion. Charley: The Apple? Si! There's Charley, Misstee, and numerous others, I'm sure.

  31. HelenMarie says Thanks for sharing the details. Although as interesting as comic books, famous ducks, bear culture, and sci-fi games and TV series are, there had to have been something a little juicier going on there...or you could make something up for fun...? ; ) Kiddin' you know! It really would be so thrilling to meet moggers. I'm envious of the good time. Cheers! And oooh watch out for that Chimay!

  33. Mike the Knife says Jonh: True dat. It was a "Good Happiness Beer-Time Fun-Party." dermahrk: All's I know is that, after socializing with her, I'd like to think of her as one of my MBFs (Mog Best Friends). poebegone: It's wonderful what a little inebriation can do... SunshineDaydream: Okay. I'll admit it. I am now carrying Hyman's love child. Or is it mollifire's? Damned Belgian ale! brittanybf: You know it, sister!

  35. fistula spume says How fun. I'm going to have to create a couple of new accounts so I can have a mog meet up with myself. The pictures would be kind of sad though. Looks like you all had a blast. Smiles all around. Someday I'll meet a mogger. Sweet post Mike. I like Donald Duck if it's by Carl Barks. Daffy is all right by me also. It's ok to like both.

  37. Mike the Knife says mollifire: No sweat! And what a lovely gift! A tune (and super-cute viddy) from the delectable Billie Piper! I do believe I will respond with a post in praise of Piper in short order. fistula spume: I, too, am a Carl Barks devotee, and own copies of the majority of his Donald and Uncle Scrooge comic-book stories - while enjoying Daffy for the anarchic cartoon lunatic he is. BTW, I'm fairly certain that you'd be a welcome presence at any MOG Meet, fisty... Chuck Guest: Righty-o, man!
