WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Moving the Portable Party

Posted about 1 year ago
Hangin’ and bangin’ on a Saturday night: It’ll be the standard dinner-gallery-nightclub run with a few comrades. Not too original. A little of the same old same-old, but certainly manageable. I’m sure that some of us have clubs or floating parties that they try to attend on a frequent basis – places where the scene is always worth the trouble of going out. I know how bummed I’ve been whenever one of the reliables closes down, relocates, or dwindles away into nothingness.A favorite, long-running San Francisco event – a monthly shindig rife with DJs, live bands and performance artists, art on the walls, massage therapists, and a great (albeit trendy) crowd of Boho regulars and parading freakazoids – is being forced to move from its customary setting with a wonderful rooftop garden, a chill-out lounge, and numerous side-rooms. (Some evil bastard made a complaint to the cops, and, well, you know the rest.) Although I’m sure the next location will have charms of its own, I already miss the usual haunt. What’s a guy to do when they close up his favorite honky-tonk, and the patrons go elsewhere? Move on to the next one, I guess. Dwight Yoakam, singing Buck Owens, probably knows how I feel. Do you?

  2. Mike the Knife says Tempting, Blair. I'm not one for festivals, but ya never know. And, dammit! My next L.A. sojourn will be highlighted by a meeting of the minds - satisfied and otherwise - over the proverbial oat sodas.

  3. Spike says That's a great Yoakam cut. Sorry to hear about your hang out being terminated. I can't think of anything to say that isn't lame and philosophical, so I'll simply wish you the best.

  5. Sturgell says There is always someone who complains and ruin everything.Hopefully all of this will be more of a new beginning rather than an end of an era.

  6. Mike the Knife says Spike: Dwight does rule! I'll survive the upheaval, and there's always another diversion waiting down the block. satisfiedmind2: And you know who we'll be toasting! Sturgell: NIMBYs! Wouldn't be surprised if it's an event that you've attended at one time or another. It's underground stuff, so no names, but it's always a fine and trippy time. Here's to new beginnings!

  7. vannatta says Mike - I know exactly how you feel - from Boston to New York - hell, even a few faves in Miami... its such a bummer when the usual haunts close down... and no matter where you move to, its never the same... like people, they all have their own personality.

  12. dermahrk says I like Dwight Yoakam, but.... 1) The "yellow buttons" no longer play for me. I just get ??Error On Page?? 2) Buck Owens was obviously Dwight's biggest influence, yet it's hard for me to believe that Buck's original version was in this draggy tempo. Doesn't work for me. 3) That video is schizo. Salacious shots of a female body, interspersed with boring shots of Dwight in a farmer's cap, then him being rubbed on while he does a slo-mo version of his stage schtick. Could he have been the inspiration for the Lyle Lovett song "Skinny Legs"?

  13. Mike the Knife says dermahrk: 1) Not responsible for the "play" buttons, but they've been working for me (after a brief wait) on full streams that we in the MOGiverse have posted - even when I get the seemingly omnipresent error warning. 2) I didn't have access to a video or mp3 of Buck's quintessential version of the song, but I'm quite fond of Dwight's interpretation - although I prefer the Flying Burrito Brothers' cover. Anyway, it was just a thematic choice, rather than an appreciation of the talented Mr. Yoakam. 3) Hey! Dwight may be busy on the farm all day, but he deserves a little fun, too.
