Knife Digs Into Grizzly Bear

Posted about 1 year ago
You know how sometimes you listen to a highly touted band or singer, but something about the artist(s) just doesn’t click. Maybe it was after a recommendation by someone you trust - if you know what I mean, fellow MOGgers. Then, later in the game, you hear an irresistible song that you think that you’ve never heard before, and you’re so excited and delighted, and you must find out who it is. And it turns out to be something that was praised and endorsed before and that you had already dismissed.Last night, I caught the lavishly-praised Brooklyn, NY-based quartet Grizzly Bear as they performed their dreamy, progressive folk-rock/neo-doo-wop ballad “Knife” on “The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson,” and I suddenly understood the fuss over them. I mean, hell, The New York Times judged Yellow House, the album that spawned the song, as one of the top releases of 2006. They first dropped some sounds in 2004. They’re among the new wave of thoughtful, expressive pop and rock musicians from Brooklyn that includes one of my faves, The National. So where have I been? Elsewhere, I guess. The appearance on Ferguson’s program was a delight, with all four Grizzlies beautifully, airily weaving vocals into the mix. The melody touched me. The lyrics moved me. In a droll move, the band members all wore fake moustaches during the performance. And I was sold. With a title like “Knife,” I couldn’t ignore the track, and I heard and enjoyed it when it was first released. But I never went back to it after the initial listen, nor did I check out Yellow House. My mistake, rectified today. It’s all beautiful stuff. Even hypnotic. Let it seduce you, if it hasn’t already…For starters, here’s the weird, wonderful video for “Knife”: And here's the version from "The Late Late Show":I’m sure I’m not alone in occasionally ignoring brilliant suggestions about music I should hear. I’m just happy when the great material eventually reaches me, despite my heedlessness.

  1. TBoom says I can see why it took the performance on the Late Late Show to make you take notice. I think the live performance from the show blows away the studio version on the video. Thanks for sharing this. I'll try to see them live - they must play often around these parts if they're from Brooklyn. Gotta love those mustaches.

  2. Augusts1 says Geezus f'n heysus, that was INCREDIBLE Mike! That was a completely perfect song live. It sounded like a recorded version it was so perfect. Amazing! I got turned onto them a few months back by our missed Cynthia/Girlcrawl who posted them over on the dark side. I hadn't heard of them until then & enjoyed the albums I heard but this live performance, there's just no comparison. I love when bands eclipse their recorded music live, you know they have mad talent! The vocal harmonies they were doing kinda reminded me of the Byrds to an extent. Great stuff, thanks!

  3. dermahrk says Somehow I started picking up an almost 50s-retro element. Maybe it's the chord changes and the almost-Phil-Spectorlike big sound. I liked it (and also preferred the live version) but I thought it got a bit repetitive as it went on. And I could not understand one word. Is that lead singer also sporting a fake nose? He could give Pete Townsend some competition.

  4. Mike the Knife says TBoom: Come for the phony lip-fuzz - stay for the stellar song stylings! But seriously, I was way-impressed by the TV appearance. And the album was definitely worth my ear-time. August: Must've been Girlcrawl who first brought 'em to my attention. Glad this reawakened your interest in them, too. dermahrk: You might note that I i.d.ed the song as a "dreamy, progressive folk-rock/neo-doo-wop ballad" in my post, so I heard the same strains you did, and reacted in kind. I just get hyp-no-tized by the song, live or studio. Don't know about the nose on display, but Pete's in a class of his own. Schnozz ahoy!

  6. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Should have known. Every mash goes through you before making it to the internet.

  8. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says It's been a long time since I last made a mashup. Perhaps I should get busy!

  10. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Time gets in the way Mike. I do sometimes dig out the old ones and give them a listen.

  11. HelenMarie says Blissful music and live performance. The video was slightly disturbing though...like Star Trek meets Tool. ?

  12. Mike the Knife says Ha! Pretty astute description of the vid, Sunny. All it needed was the Gorn to show up and attack the band.
