WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Popping In

Posted about 1 year ago
Got back to San Francisco on Saturday night. And just in time. I was able to catch the energizing and generous (five encore songs!) headlining set by The Gutter Twins (the highly-anticipated collaboration between alt-rock singer-songwriters Greg Dulli, late of the Afghan Whigs and Twilight Singers, and Mark Lanegan of Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age) at Bimbo's 365 Club in North Beach as part of this year's Noise Pop festival (the 16th already). In the aftermath of the Twins' performance, I am enthused about the album that's on its way this week.Alas, I was too late to see Great Northern, Monotonix, and Apache, but you can read all about them and The Gutter Twins in the expectedly insightful review by that cool-and-dry-as-a-vermouth-free-martini MOGger Pekka (1234chainsaw): http://mog.com/1234chainsaw/blog_post/147592As a matter of fact, there's little that I could add to Pekka's coverage ("smoldering," indeed), other than to express my pleasure at chatting with him in the lobby of Bimbo's as the show let out.Yep. Knife met chainsaw, and no one got hurt.

  3. Mike the Knife says satisfiedmind2: I was well satisfied, Blair. And it's true. You really can't go wrong with those two guys. And you can't go wrong with Dulli and Lanegan either. ;-) Dale: Yes, you really can't go wrong with those two guys. (OK. I'll stop.) I do believe that, of all the fests and music conferences, Noise Pop is my fave. Along with being in my home town, the programming is right to my taste, and the gigs are divvied up between a bunch of cool clubs. No need for outdoor all-day marathons. Just damned fine rock 'n' pop in congenial venues!

  5. wassonii says Brilliant and handsome pic, gents. Been laying superduper low for a while, but had to add my 2cents:) The sounds, the sounds. Goodness, for sure. And the venues. From what you two write, it definitely looks like some manner of future destination por moi and the missus. Good to see such smiling faces. Be well!

  7. Mike the Knife says Jonh Ingham: Knife Met Chainsaw - I'd say that's one for Misstee's ongoing wacky-band-name search. 1234chainsaw: You know it. Let's see if we can hang out again before you head for Europa, maybe with a few other Bay Area MOGgers. wassonii: Thanks! I can't speak for Pekka, but my good looks are all about the regular sheep placenta injections. And yes indeed. Noise Pop rules! Zeroskilz: I think you'll be happy with what you hear.
