Super-Duper

Posted about 1 year ago
We’ve just seen a phenomenal, historic Super Bowl – one for the ages. (How ‘bout them Giants?!?) Although I hope that all registered voters in those states with primaries have done their patriotic duty and cast ballots, I doubt that any more than a small percentage bothered.Ah, well. With all of the Super This and Super That, I remembered a Super Something that bears another listen in these perilous, info-overloaded times. There’s no better theme for today’s jarring mix of politics and hedonism than brilliant, puckish New York City composer/performer Laurie Anderson’s ground-breaking electro-ode to love, fear and disconnection in the Age of Technology, “O Superman.” Video below…

  2. ivylander says I'm fairly confident that this remains the only hit single (#2 in Britain in 1981) recorded for $500 on a National Endowment for the Arts grant. And it's for sure the best one....

  3. Mike the Knife says tangerman: My pleasure. Knowing of the overseas embargo, I wouldn't have just left the excerpt up top unless I had a nice viddy of the number to go. ivylander: That's for sure!

  5. fistula spume says I voted but it didn't really matter too much since I'm in Huck/Clintonland. Still I had my say by golly. As far as super bowls go I'm more of a rice bowl or cereal bowl guy myself. Of course I absolutely love me some Laurie.

  7. Mike the Knife says Jonh: Yeah. I remember when the format was "no format." fist: Whether football, music or politics, history is written by the winners. Cody: I await the day when we break 50%, and the people truly speak! (Ha.)

  8. goodmusiconly says How funny that we both posted this song within a week of each other (I hadn't seen this before, so thanks for sending me here! And apologies for being terrible about keeping up with your posts, my life has been nuts. I'm trying to catch up here a little bit every day.) One thing I never noticed before now was the referece to Jules Massenet in the title of the song. I've always been a fan of Meditation from Thaïs:

  9. Mike the Knife says No worries, Erin. Sometimes I can't keep up with the Trusteds either, especially if I'm on the road or on deadline. Yep. That's the title - and it inspired access to some Anne-Sophie! I'm well pleased.
