WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Hark!

Posted over 2 years ago
Despite my given name (that would be Michael), I'm no angel (arch, herald, or otherwise), and when it comes to singing, I'm certainly not Josh Groban (thank the fates). But, as some of my Trusted MOGgers know, this time of the year puts a song in my heart - and I don't mean "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer."It’s not a generic melody, and it changes, although lately I've been humming the "Feed the world!" chorus to the old Band Aid single. Somehow, that’s fitting. Nothing wrong with charitable impulses, and 'tis the season. Even if we’re in the dark more often than not, a light continues to shine. And this fortnight is when we really try to raise the amperes, strike the flint, fan the flame.I’d call it necessary. It’s becoming ridiculously Biblical in this formerly utopian future of ours - one that showed up and defied technological progress and the possibility of social evolution by dumping war, pestilence, starvation, and general hysteria on us. We have to make a difference if we can, even in the smallest way. A bit of kindness, if you will.I've accepted that our tenure in this existence is always gonna be a mix of dark and light. In that regard, my 2007 was typical. There was progress on the career front, and there were setbacks. I embraced the best of the latest cultural offerings, and suffered through the worst. (It's all part of the gig.) I made a few new friends - and cherish them. I unexpectedly lost a buddy whose sudden passing at a relatively early age sent a shock wave through this entire online community. While acknowledging the loss, I know that it's imperative to move forward, undaunted, after mourning. That's what he would've done in the same situation.Life might not be a bowl of ice cream and a hit of ecstasy, but every day, I manage to find something - be it simple or significant - to lift my spirits. I hope you do, too.No matter how easy or difficult things have been going up until now, I wish you a 2008 filled with joy, prosperity, and good health. And if it gets too weird, remember that it’s simply the absurdity that we all face on a daily basis. Take a deep breath - and have a good laugh.(Anyone in need of one more cup of Yuletide musical cheer should tap the “play” button and drink in “Carol of the Bells,” beautifully interpreted by my abso-favorite artists of the past year, The Bird and The Bee. Can’t wait until their next album!)

  8. Mike the Knife says gympumpkin: Many thanks! (And remember to keep bundled up. I know it can get pretty chilly when the winds whip off the lake...) goodmusiconly: You are too kind, Erin. No. Let me amend that. You're just kind enough! Don't worry. I'm on the case. Meanwhile, quaff a winter warmer for me, and I'll reciprocate. Found an intriguing Belgian Xmas ale at Whole Foods the other day. Looks like the perfect post-goose quencher! lucysilverlining: Repurposed? Maybe. But now with a soundtrack! ;-) Greatly appreciated the salutation and praise, especially coming from a writer as skilled as you, lucy. I will be back in the City of Conniving Angels within a couple of weeks. Let us see what our respective schedules allow... Joxley: Same to you! Now, bring us some figgy pudding! (Or failing that, introduce us to another killer band...) redmiller1: You're welcome. And if you see Ms. George, give her my love and regards. Lester Jonze: Ouch. dharmachris: You're on, homeboy. Until then, best wishes to all of the MOG contingent in the greater Delaware Valley!

  9. Lady Miss Ian says And a Hark to you Mr. Mike. Even though 2007 was a bit of weird year, there was enough amusing, hilarious, heartwarming, thoughtful times to weigh out the bad-strange, sad and frustrating parts. Cheers to you and your wonderful presence on the planet - real and virtual. Let's all meet back at MOG in 2008, m'kay?

  12. Bartleby says If "our tenure in this existence is always gonna be a mix of dark and light," you've provided me with enough light to brighten up an otherwise sullen and silent night. Thanks Michel Le Couteau. Happy Yule to you and best of wishes for 2008 ;)

Speaking of Philly, it's the esteemed Eugene Ormandy, master of the Philadelphia Ork! Thank YOU for this one, B. ROCKNROLLPIMP: Ah, mighty Pimp! Many blessings in your direction, too - and a spin of Bowie's "Hang Onto Yourself" for good measure.

As ever, it's a treat to have your wit and spirit and insights helping to fuel the MOG machine.
