Re-Connection via Mash-Up
If anyone questions the value or validity of mash-ups, I have to laugh. True, I’ve been known to deride collage as the last refuge of the uncreative. But mash-ups, like canny collages, can make something quite original out of “found†materials. And that’s beyond the sheer entertainment factor.Speaking of found, it’s also mega-cool when a mash-up producer resurrects a great tune from the fade of memory and the glut of decades-worth of product, and gives it new life in conjunction with another, more recent track. So thanks be to the peripatetic DJ/production team of Adrian & the Mysterious D (a.k.a. A plus D) – two-thirds of the San Francisco-based braintrust behind the monthly Bootie mash-up parties in the Bay Area, L.A., New York City and Europe. They dug into the vaults and pulled out the tuff post-punk rocker “Connection†by the short-lived U.K. rock band Elastica (helmed by the mighty singer-guitarist Justine Frischmann). Then, they turned to a roiling song of more recent vintage: “Standing in the Way of Control†by another female-fronted band – the Pacific Northwest-based Gossip (led by vocalist Beth Ditto). The result – dubbed “Standing In the Way of Connection†- is a total rush, and reminded me of why I fancy both numbers. As a bonus, it also reconnected me to Elastica. Connect here:
