WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Mash-Up on My Mind

Posted about 1 year ago
  • Artist:
Willie Nelson vs U2 vs MARRS
  • Track:
    Always With You
One of the things about mash-ups that keeps me coming back again and again – and assures that I’ll keep seeking out new or unheard efforts - is the excitement of encountering one of those borderline insane, completely counter-intuitive blends with the most improbable of ingredients. And when you find that it works beautifully and you can dance to it, it’s a nice little jolt to the soul.I’ll assume that the Swedish production team Divide & Kreate knew about and was inspired by the Pet Shop Boys’ thrilling synth-rock cover of Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind.” Or they might have realized how elegantly the original version by Nelson - country-and-western’s magnificent, free-spirited, herb-loving, tax-evading, ballad-crooning Red-Headed Stranger - would fit with the glorious love song “With or Without You” by celebrated Irish pomp-rockers U2. But the real secret to the following mash-up’s success is the inclusion of elements from the techno-dance smash “Pump Up the Volume” by the British studio brigade M/A/R/R/S. Willie? U2? M/A/R/R/S? Yup! Together for the first time. Stream away!

  4. Augusts1 says Pretty good, although I would've preferred Neil Tennant's vocals on his cover of Willie's song over Willie's version & vocals. But as is said 'beggars can't be choosers'. I guess w/Willie's vocal on there it gives the mashup even more of a stark difference between the artists & therefore more of a jolt which was what the dj's were wanting I'm sure.

  6. Mike the Knife says Please don't beg, August. ;-) That said, you are correct. No way that the Tennant vocal would've had the same impact as the twang of Willie's original in contrast with the U2 track. Thus, the appeal... Misstee: Shall we deem it another mash smash?

  13. Mike the Knife says Jonh Ingham: Just rooting around in the vaults and seeing what I can find... soulrocket: Again, the coolness is when there's something unlikely or sucky, or something that you wouldn't spin on its own, and the blend makes it new and special and worth hearing. redmiller1: Like a pint of Guinness and some barbecue... walkingthecow: You and me both. Lizziegreeneyes: I aims t' please, home skillet! Girlcrawl: They do tickle my fancy.
