Shut Up and Mash

  • Artist:
    Rihanna vs New Order
  • Track:
    Shut Up and Order
The incredibly seductive nature and certified across-the-board hit status of singer Rihanna’s breakthrough soul ballad “Umbrella” marked her as a talent with serious potential. But one smash – even one with the imprimatur of superstar rapper-producer-R & B mogul Jay-Z who is mentoring Rihanna - doesn’t insure longevity nor suggest any impetus to sway from a formula that worked. So I was a little surprised when I was channel-surfing and caught Rihanna and an extremely live band doing her hard-rocking, new-wave-influenced dance number “Shut Up and Drive.” The track sounds like it’s sampling dark electro-thrash group Orgy’s cover of the quintessential Manchester dance-club smash “Blue Monday” by New Order (the synth-rock ensemble that arose from the shards of Joy Division after the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis). While acknowledging the wealth of unlikely yet effective samples used in hip-hop (and with all due respect), that’s hardly Jay-Z territory. It was a matter of time before some enterprising mash-up producer brought Rihanna’s slice together with the original version of “Blue Monday,” and that guy was Xam – a Dutch DJ whose other productions include such simpatico pairings as Joss Stone with TLC, Paolo Nutini with The Prodigy, and Mika with the Chemical Brothers. The groove is on with “Shut Up and Order”:

  4. Augusts1 says Ok back, LOVE the title of this one as well as the song. Can't go too wrong when adding New Order to most anything since I've been a fan since the mid '80s!

  5. meko says LUV the sound Mike, are you trying to say she has a bad producer?

  6. Mike the Knife says August: Happy to hear you’re liking it. meko: Same to you, but I never said she has a bad producer, only that the sound of “Shut Up and Drive” is leagues away from the style and nature of her breakthrough hit.

  7. Dale says Spankin' good mash-up, but anything that touches "Blue Monday" turns to gold, IMHO.

  8. Lady Miss Ian says Most awesome, Mike. As other's have said, can't go wrong mixing in New Order. Do you guys know about the Blue Monday owners club????

  9. Mike the Knife says Dale: So very true, D. Even as I left the screening of "Control," I was humming "How does it feel to treat me like you do?" in my head. Lady Miss Ian: It was a slam-dunk, L.M.I. But the Blue Monday owners club? Do tell.

  11. Mike the Knife says I'll say, Helen! It's remarkable how well vintage New Order has held up. They still sound fresh on the 'phones-n-pod, in the car, in the den, and - yep - on the dance floor. Throw in the Rhianna thing, which is simply sinister in its catchiness, and - Bango!

  13. Jonh Ingham says I've just been made the office DJ on the basis of playing this. We're in heavy rotation and there are smiles all round. M. le Knife, you're still le Roi.

  14. Lady Miss Ian says Hi Mike - the Blue Monday Owner's Club is an online project where proud owners of the Blue Monday 12 inch can post photos of themselves with it (and it's uber-cool sleeve) and write some comments. As Spencer, the owner of the site says: Do you own a 12" of "Blue Monday" by New Order? (Must be the 1983 version and a 1983 pressing) Do you want to be part of this ongoing artwork? If so, the artist Spencer Graham wants a hi-res photograph of you with your copy/copies. Check it out here: "http://www.bluemondayownersclub.com/":http://www.bluemondayownersclub.com/

  17. Mike the Knife says soulrocket: I'm not sure who's spinning it at the clubs. I could only procure it through the grace of my pals at Bootie. But yes indeed. It smokes a lot of the other mashes out there. Jonh Ingham: To some, I am a royal pain. Here at MOG? Royalty! I'm just pleased to be able to cheer up the peasants, drones, and the rest of my loyal subjects. Lady Miss Ian: Checked out the site, and was very amused. In fact, I do have the original '83 12-inch dance mix pressing in its cover, as well as the first edition album and "Blue Monday" 7-inch single - all done up in their picture sleeves. If I could find them with some ease, I might consider contributing to the madness. Still, they are in the archives and in mint condition. Neill: Certainly sounder than the dollar... fistula spume: Priceless, if you ask me...

  19. ZenPop says The great thing about mashups is even if I don't like BOTH songs, I still dig the mashup... Thanks! ...and keep 'em coming!

  20. QueenofHell says Got myself listening to this again. Where do you find these excellent mash-ups? I might have told you this before, but some people in London say that they are 'mashup' when they're off their heads on drugs. Just looked in up on wiki and got this: 'Mashup (or mash it up) is a Jamaican Creole term meaning to destroy', which makes sense in that context.

  21. Mike the Knife says The phrase has a few roots, QoH, and is now in common usage as regards new-media companies and websites that interact with one another. As for where you can find 'em, they're here, there and everywhere, but a great clearing-house is the home page of my hometown mash-up mavens who do the Bootie parties. (http://bootiesf.com) Check the Top 10 each month for potential downloads - or use the links to other DJs and producers.
