So Much for U2 Being Humorless

For all of the complaints that U2 singer Bono has an inflated sense of his own importance and that the earnest, spectacularly successful Irish rock band is overrated, I've always thought that they were among the greats.
And any growling about U2's lack of humor should be squelched by the funny, self-deprecating bits they've done during their unprecedented week-long residence on the platinum-standard of American TV talk-a-thons, "The Late Show with David Letterman." In addition to playing their asses off (and promoting their latest album No Line on the Horizon) every night on the same Ed Sullivan Theater stage where the Beatles made their most historic TV appearances in the '60s, the U2 boys have been seen shoveling snow outside the venue and delivering a list of the Top 10 things U2 has learned over the years.
But my favorite moment has to be a clip revealing their hard work around the "Late Show" offices:
Top 10 Things U2 Has Learned Over the Years:

I know, it was funny and cool to see them on the late show, being a huge U2 fan I've seen many clips of them being very humorous that many people may not be aware of.
great post!!! with the vids.
Fadedu2: With a screen name like that, I couldn't be sure whether your reaction would be a "yay" or a "nay." But I'm glad it was a "yay." Thanks for checking in!
LoL, yeah I know I thought about it before, the faded part of my screen name has to do with an old band I used to be in called The faded Pharaohs. U2 is one f my favorite bands.
thanks there Mike, been enjoying the extended appearance this week but I missed the "offices..." bit. Thought it totally ad-libbed (and quite funny) when Edge said "Sting" instead of "the itch". One more stop 2nite!
this actually brought a smile to my face. You do not get to see enough footage like this, and it helps you remember why you loved the band at some point in your life
Funny stuff! They are still a great band & despite the bloated self importance they may have acquired over the years(yes Bono, I'm talkin' to you) they manage to make some great music even now. Been watching some of the other live clips from the show on youtube & they continue to put on a killer live show!
Fadedu2: Not a bad choice for "favorite band," if you ask me.
scot: You betcha. Tivo'd the Friday show, so I don't know what went down - yet. But I know what I'll be watching with my Saturday breakfast.
Rawk: A sense of humor is a must, isn't it? One of humanity's greatest attributes...
August: True, true, and true again!
How's this for humour? The first video "is not available in your country or domain", while the second plays just fine. A good Top 10 as well. I do like the sly way The Edge delivers his lines. "I suck at Guitar Hero"...lol.
Arghhh, Jonh! Check your own U.K. YouTube feeds or run a search of "U2 Letterman" for the office gag. It's worth it.
I can watch just about any of those pages of videos, I can't watch them in the office. I did like the Line On Hold telephone music though. That was silly. If only they were like that on stage.
The "on-hold music" bit was the one - although there may have been one more tonight. I shall see soon enough.
They are laughing at themselves? Good, glad to see they've joined the crowd. :-)
that is quite a rocking riff that could sound like tom morello given the right production and guitar sound
dermahrk: Heh. And yet, I still get chills whenever I hear "Where the Streets Have No Name," "In God's Country," "I Will Follow," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Pride," "Two Hearts," "Desire," "With or Without You," "Mysterious Ways," "Vertigo," "Beautiful Day," etc. Call me a sap. but that's just the way it is.
NeilNathan: They may very well feel that a few Tom and Rage tracks could sound like them given the right production and guitar sound. ;-)
U2, comedy, and a warm Saturday in Philly. Thanks for supplying two out of the three, man.
De nada, phellow Philadelphian. (You know what they say: You can take the boy out of Philly, but you can't stop him from rooting for the Phillies, Eagles, Sixers and Flyers.)
Yeah, I did not get into U2 until he had made a few albums, I think a lot of us do not want to give up our time to some new group since we are still happy with what we have! For me I will be driving or working and also might be at a friends house and the radio or cd is on and all of a sudden you hear a song that to you it rock's, and now a piece of music, group and style is added into the gray matter. This is an ongoing thing with me.
That was freaking hilarious. I dvr'd, (is that a word?), the whole week and was watching all the episodes the other night. The moment after I saw this clip I pressed pause and called out to Michelle to come and watch this. She's not into U2 and even Michelle thought it was awesome that they did this skit. It shows how they like to poke fun at themselves. It was such an awesome week. How many rock bands would do a tv residency like this with skits, top 10 lists et all? Not very many. So many bands take themselves way too seriously. Not U2. That's why I still respect them to this day.
elmanolete: I guess we all roll in our own ways. I love finding the new stuff, even as I dig on the old.
myeverpresentpast: D'accord. It was the first time for such an occasion on Letterman's show, although I recall Counting Crows doing a couple nights in one week - and Dave is always eager to have Foo Fighters on, any old time they'd like to be there.
I have found when I like something in music I hang on to it and just keep adding on more-more-more and after a few decade's you won't get rid of them!
Well guess what I gave about a dozen 78's away and they were sold for $$$$, they never even bought me a beer! I have noticed when I go in to the music stores with a collector's section they are quite high.
I was talking to the owner as he was sorting in the back and asked him or mentioned as to why he had over 2-3 pallet's of 78's and after telling me he had been at a sell out he said " how much you think that cost, oh, $150,00, he said try 2-3 times that, and then I found out that of those who were famous he had multiple complete set's of a few of them and since it was every record they made in the set the sleeve's looked brand new. Finally, he said, I think I can recover all of my money on just two of the artisit's.
I asked who, just his head nodded, NO. I have a box of these about50-100 think I will trot in this summer.
I am sure you music lover's know this but I do not see it going to well!!
As usual, it's whatever the market will bear.
You just know Sting was watching this, going "Et tu, Edge"?
The on-hold music bit was brilliant.
