Franz Ferdinand Lately

Knowing how certain MOGgers (who shall go unnamed here) love Scotland's most swaggering contemporary rock band Franz Ferdinand, I thought it imperative to provide the site with a couple of videos from a recent episode of "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson."
I'm fond of the new FF album Tonight: Franz Ferdinand - which I've already touted elsewhere as a hybrid of dark cabaret music and glam-rock for disaffected romantics, like me. So I was excited to see them perform on the tube last week. But there was an extra segment thrown in for good measure. Ferguson, who happens to be Scottish (in case you can't place the accent), interviewed FF lead singer and fellow Glaswegian Alex Kapranos before the band played "Ulysses" from Tonight. It was a pretty jocular face-to-face, and the subsequent performance was up to my expectations.
The studio version of "Ulysses" can be heard on the MOG Player. The interview with Alex and the live take on "Ulysses" are available below - at least, for now.

I liked Franz Ferdinand for a total of 3 months in 2005. Then I heard Gang of Four, and wondered how anyone in their right mind could like these plagiarists. I think the rest of the indie world has slowly caught on too.
Hmmm. They don't remind me of Gang of Four - and they certainly never struck me as "indie." Mainstream label, cool-guy image, etc. And, as far as plagerism or influence (if you will), it's omnipresent, even epidemic, in rock and pop these days. As Ecclesiastes says, there is nothing new under the sun.
Well yeah, but in this case it's pretty flagrant
Listen to "Tell Her Tonight" and then listen "Not Great Men." I'm surprised GoF didn't pursue a Wire v. Elastica-esque copyright suit there. But at least Elastica did something different and better with it. Franz just turned it into watered-down, bowel-movement-enducing power pop
I have heard 3 songs off the new album, have yet to get it. I think I am still upset after their last recording of garbage
You should Kevin, it's really good.
I appreciated being able to see Alex and Craig trade barbs, especially about their respective neighborhoods in Glasgow.
Anyone notice Alex is wearing one white shoe & one black? I agree Mike that they don't sound like GOF to me either, and I'm a huge GOF fan. I'm sure there's some of their influence in there though. Nice clips, enjoyed them.
TynansAnger: As if there's anything wrong with water, a bowel movement, or power-pop. In any case, I'm sure the Go4 think that the music belongs to the people, along with the power.
Rawk: I like Tonight better than the previous album, for what it's worth.
Dale: Yep. It was pretty telling that Alex comes from a comparatively posh record, and Craig - well, not so much.
August: It's all there in black and white. :-)
This is much much better than their performance of the same song at Jonathan Ross (that was a terribly thin one). It still misses a bit of the groove, but it's a vast improvement. That's a relief! Thank you, Mike!
Kevin, "their last recording of garbage"?! REPENT or I'll block you ;)
Signed,
one of the ones that shall go unnamed ;)
GO4 know that the means of production need to be owned by the people - sometimes in the form of 4 guys from Bear's End. I'm digging what I hear so far from the new album.
Very nice, thanks for posting! The interview was pretty funny.
As for the Gang of Four thingy, I think that has influenced them quite a bit, but as Mike said, influence is omnipresent. Also, with this album I think they distance themselves a bit from that and show they can do other things as well. I'm a big fan of this album.
I am totally digging the new album. I was in the same line as Kevin with their last album - it was pretty bland. Then there was a post by Anna....where was it? Ah yes! Here it is. Long story short, I made the purchase.
Anna: Didn't catch the performance on Wossy's show, but I'm fine with this one. Re: Kevin's comment - The opinions expressed on this thread do not necessarily represent those of the management. So there.
Jonh: Thank you for the clarification, comrade.
SA: Okay. Maybe there's a bit of Go4 in there somewhere, but there's a lot of other stuff, too. Like numerous pints of ale.
p-wagz: This one is definitely a move forward, and, as I said, I like it. Growth of sorts. It will be interesting to hear what's next.
I think that their new album is a hoot...
I can't wait to see them at Coachella.
annie: I'm no festival guy, not that I would even try until the banged-up leg is good to go all day and night. But I'll be watching for the club or theater date.
