...are very good indeed. With certain reservations. Here are some salient things that I've learned in my (relatively) brief time on Earth: Follow your muse, and enjoy your work. Don't smoke. Savor what you eat, but keep red meat, fried and fatty foods, and refined sugar to a minimum; and, unless you’re at a five-star restaurant, don’t stuff your face. A glass of wine or a beer in a stein is fine, but abuse of hard liquor and narcotics will ruin you. And the giving and receiving of pleasure in equal measure is the way to approach any romantic or carnal relationship. Oh yeah. One more item: Music is nourishment for the soul. Eat up!Now, here’s the late, great Ian Dury - a British singer/songwriter who came to prominence in the punk era, had more than his share of troubles, yet smiled and sang them away on such engaging, memorable hit singles as “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” and “Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3.” He and his sleek, tight band - the Blockheads – offer up the hedonist’s anthem “Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll” from Dury’s 1977 album New Boots and Panties!!, performed extremely live in concert:

  7. Mike the Knife says Mmmmm...onion rings, po' boys, fried calimari. You'll notice that I said to keep it to a minimum. All bets are hedged whenever I'm way down yonder in New Orleans. And perhaps I should have put a "one Cuban cigar a year and the occasional puff of pharmaceutical weed" caveat on the "no smoking" dictate. I guess some rules are made to be circumvented at times...

  8. Lady Miss Ian says Excellent wisdom to pass on, Guru Mike. The trick is to just show up and practice this every day. And even if you fall off the horse by eating some deep-fried hot dogs wrapped in bacon, and washing it down with whiskey, why you just pick yourself up, clean yourself up and try not to do it again. Also, making lemonade out of "life lemons", such as Ian D. did, is a good example for us all. Cheers for the positive message of the day.

  11. Mike the Knife says Lady Miss Ian: Any time, grasshopper! And, yes, the old "Never give up!" saw is a good one to remember whenever you falter... Shud33: I'll say! Furthermore, that was one helluva band he had... wassonii: So true, wass. Even moderation in moderation. ;-) Smile away!

  12. QueenofHell says Thanks for that track, Mike. I am rather fond of Ian Drury. And those are wise words. Although I agree that 'everything in moderation' are great words to live by, I have never been able to do it. I eat everything I want in phases and eat little in phases - a kind of moderating, I suppose, but not the best sort. And I always drink too much cava. I love it. As a child one of my best friends (one of a gang) had a book with the didactic message of 'care and share', which we used to shout at each other if we thought someone was being unfair. I have always tried to live by this and find myself saying 'care and share, care and share' in a rather childish manner to people who I find aren't caring and sharing.

  13. Mike the Knife says Love it, Queen of the Stygian Depths! Oddly enough, my pals and I used to mock-sweetly remind one another that "Caring is sharing!" whenever someone was being a hog about something. Textbook passive-aggressive, huh?

  14. QueenofHell says Love being the Queen of the Stygian Depths! I looked rather like what I imagine Charon the ferryman would have looked like today, when I was dressed all in black, pencil skirt and black hoodie with my hood up (in cold London) waiting for the bus. Yes, passive aggressive probably spot on.

  16. HelenMarie says Really digging this song! Sorry I missed the most positively inspiring post of -yesterday-...well since I've been roaming round these parts! Great life guidelines. I'm one for just about everything in moderation, although about a few months ago I gave up pork & red meat (except _little_ bits in red sauce), so I may have a little extra of the _other_ sinful delights. Lovin "Giving and receiving of pleasure in equal measure" and queenofhells "Care and share" is certainly one to remember. : )

  17. Mike the Knife says QueenofHell: Sounds like the latest couture from the House of Sinister. I’m sure it’s quite a fetching ensemble. chucky: Happy to hear that! sunscream: WTF ?!? SunshineDaydream: Glad to be of service. I welcome the occasional words to live by, and don’t mind passing them on.
