MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist: The Minutemen

Today is the birthday of the late D. Boon, who co-led the great rock/punk/folk/jazz trio, The Minutemen. D. Boon died in a van accident in Arizona on December 22, 1985.

Mike Watt, left, and D. Boon in 1979.

His best friend and band mate, Mike Watt, emailed this out today:

The Minutemen were one of the great'punk,' bands, and I put punk in quotes because they were punk in the way that the Talking Heads and Patti Smith and Mik DeVille and Television were punk. They did not conform; they busted loose and created a sound all their own.

I was lucky enough to see them perform twice, once opening for The Ramones; once at a record store. They were simply an amazing group, and their words were as powerful as their music.

According to Wikipedia: "Born in Napa, California, Boon formed the band in January 1980 with childhood friend Mike Watt on bass from the remnants of their previous band, The Reactionaries, later adding former Reactionaries drummer George Hurley, to form The Minutemen."

I think if D Boon were around or had lived longer he would have continued to make incredibly interesting music and provocative intelligent lyrics
