WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Watch The Mountain Goats “Woke Up New”

Posted over 3 years ago
The Mountain Goats’ new album, “Get Lonely,” is about the aftermath of a relationship. I don’t know if the songs on this album are fiction or fact, or fiction based on fact. What I do know is that the emotions in these songs ring true. Mountain Goats' John Darnielle (right) and Peter Hughes (left).“Woke Up New” is one of the best songs from an album that doesn’t have a bad one. “Woke Up New,” is about what it’s like after the girl is gone. And you just don’t know what to do. The song begins with Mountain Goats singer/songwriter John Darnielle singing: “On the morning when I woke up with out you for the first time I felt free and I felt lonely and I felt scared/ And I began to talk to myself almost immediately/ Not being used to being the only person there/ … and I sang, ‘Oh, what do I do, what do I do, what do I do, what do I do without you.”What you don’t get from looking at the words without the music and John’s voice is the pain and longing and desperation. What you don’t get without hearing this song is an overwhelming sadness. But hey, you CAN feel it when you check out the video for “Woke Up New” right here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bSdRizGYb0

  2. ted baylis says I sort of dug the song’s Suzanne Vega- type monotone narrative. Musically speaking, the track is simplistic and clichéd

  3. D-Train says God, I love the Mountain Goats, and I've had a hard time finding the new album. I heard that it's a little more inward-focused and somber then "The Sunset Tree". I really love that video. You should check out the video for "This Year" - brilliant concept.
