John Stewart, the onetime member of the Kingston Trio and the composer of the Monkees' hit, "Daydream Believer," died in San Diego Friday. He was 68.Stewart was a respected songwriter whose songs were recorded by Nanci Griffith, Rosanne Cash, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Joan Baez and many others. His first success came as a member of the Kingston Trio, one of the most popular folk group's of all time, and an influece on Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul, & Mary, and John Denver among others. Stewart joined in 1961, after the departure of Dave Guard, who founded the group in 1957.The Kingston Trio, with Stewart on board, went on to record a dozen more albums and scored such Top 40 hits as "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?"in 1962 and "Greenback Dollar"in 1963.When the group disbanded in 1967, Stewart began a solo career which included making an album with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, before they joined Fleetwood Mac.His solo recordings have been critically acclaimed for decades, although he never again found the popular success he had as a member of the Kingston Trio.For more info:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7199153.stmhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Stewart_(musician)
