It's actually a Hedy West song called "500 Miles" according to Wikipedia: "Many of Hedy's songs, including the raw materials for "500 Miles", came from her paternal grand mother Lily West, who passed on the songs she had learned as a child.

Here's more: "The first release of the song appears to have been on the 1961 self-titled debut by the Journeymen. It charted as a hit single by American country music singer Bobby Bare in 1963.[4] It has also been recorded by Peter, Paul & Mary, The Kingston Trio, Sonny & Cher, The Hooters, Reba McEntire,The Spies of Life and many others.[5]

I first heard it performed by a friend of mine n the '60s.

Really..."I Was Young When I Left Home"??

Always thought that Dylan wrote that. Then again, as Dave van Ronk said, all of those guys in the 1960s folk scene used to borrow and play each others' songs to the point that they would forget where each song actually started.
