Digging Brendan Halpin's "Long Way Back"

Posted over 4 years ago
Discovering an author whose writing I like is a real pleasure. When that author is also a Mogger, well, how cool is that!A couple of weeks back, Brendan Halpin (http://mog.com/brendanhalpin/) did a post where he offered to mail a copy of his most recent book, a novel titled "Long Way Back," to Moggers who provided their address, until he ran out of books.I quickly mogmailed him and a few days later the book showed up.Guess way, Halpin's book is excellent. The writing is funny at times, emotionally moving at times. His story of an emotionally devastated man, Frances, who is saved by punk rock rings true in a way that most (perhaps all) moggers can appreciate. I read the book in one sitting. It's that good. It's not just that Halpin gets the details right -- no one but a music fan who had dug Motorhead in high school as well as the Ramones could write about characters in love with rock 'n' roll the way Halpin does. He pulls you right into his story. His characters are three-dimensional, and there problems are believeable. Sure, there's a happy ending that is more novel than real life, but that's OK because by the time you get to the end of the book, you are so rooting for things to work out that if they didn't, well, it would be quite unsatisfying.I look forward to Brendan's next book - I hope he'll let us know when it's being published - and I hope all of you will seek out "Long Way Back."

  1. indiepixie says hmmm seems rare that punk tunes saved a man....good differentiated perspective... kudos Brendan! Nice to see a fellow writer! (tho I know who to get in touch with when my 'book' comes out. give me 5 years). Thanks Michael!

  2. Michael Goldberg says It's more than just the songs. In the book, Frances starts playing bass in a punk band... But I think music gets a lot of people through tough times.
