Down to Earth

Artist:
I'm a music reviewer for my college newspaper and last year I stumbled upon Oren's myspace. He had messaged me about reviewing his music (sounds like a lie) so i went to his site, fully expecting to find the normal garage band riff raff that seems to litter the MySpace landscape now-a-days. Fortunately for me I discovered one of my favorite artists. His pure blend of traditional and contemporary seem too perfect at times, reminding me of folk legends and pop icons simultaneously.
Oren is originally from Isreal, which I'm assuming is the reason his lyrics are more poetic than most American or British songwriters can manage, because he takes the view of English from the standpoint of a foreigner looking at the tools of our speech as paint brushs, using them to color landscapes that seem so familiar yet all the more vivid than one can put their finger on.
He's quoted saying:
"I am not a fashionable man. And my music is, therefore, unfashionable. My songs don’t have an attitude which you could sell. I don’t have an attitude which I am trying to make you buy, not that I'm aware of. If I am any good, it's because my songs are good. If I'm no good, it's because my songs are no good. There's nothing else to hide behind. For me a good song consists of a melody which surprises you, but pleases you, which carries an engaging story told in rhymes. A good song is loyal to the artist's truth of the moment. The song will remain good even when the artist's truth has changed."
It truly seems that his heart is in the music, not the image, not the money, not the fame, but the music that he makes. His sincerity has presence on the record.
I promised to review his CD when it came to iTunes, but alas, it didn't make it to the US iTunes until just this month, and i couldn't wait, so I tossed in the URL for Britan's Amazon and ordered it (the price still suprises me) and had it shipped.
"...it is not the outcome of three years of my life, it IS three years of my life. Though it plays less than an hour."
Definately one of my all time favorite artists and one of my top ten favorite CDs as a whole.
