WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Hard Candy

Posted over 2 years ago
I am spending my weekend in Copenhagen by myself. Well.........visiting friends but my family is at home. I haven't slept enough, I'm coming down with a cold and I've got a bad hangover. Since yesterday I've been staying with a friend of mine who is as single as can be. His apartment takes me straight back to the time when I was single with no love and no children in sight. Funny how fast I can get used to this. He's not here now.......I've had the apartment for myself all day. Really weird because I have so much time on my hands, no food in the fridge, a couch, a blanket, a toothbrush and a huge TV. My friend is part of the local hip hop/r&B scene. He owns a record store in town, writes album-reviews for a music-magazine and writes r&b-lyrics for others to sing. I am his only friend coming from the rock-world. It is so funny being here 'cause I don't fit in at all. No "bling bling" when it comes to me. I introduce him to Joanna Newsom and he shakes his head. I introduce him to Feist and he calls her boring. I claim to be more open-minded when it comes to the songs he wants me to hear. He's currently raving about this guy named Bobby Valentino and I listen. Don't like it though....but I can see why people would.I look at his huge collection and think about MOG's three funky stooges. I should be diggin' up something for you to hear. I'm just too hungover and something else is demanding my attention..............and this is actually why I'm writing. He has a massive DVD-collection and that it one of my reasons for looking forward to every visit. Lots of new movies and lots of classic. I watched The Squid and the Whale + Punch Drunk Love last night. Two of my favorite movies. This morning when I woke up I decided to watch Hard Candy. Wow.........this is a great movie dealing with a rather heavy issue concerning a man in his 30's and a girl at 14. I don't want to get into details. Those who have not seen this movie should do so. Those who have........tell me what you thought about it. The movie ends with this song. A favorite of mine but also a song I haven't heard for some time. It was a pleasant surprise and a perfect way to end the movie. Here's a clip from the movie + the song Elephant Woman by Blonde Redhead.ONE NOTE THOUGH!!! IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET YOU SHOULD PROBABLY SKIP THE CLIP SINCE IT REVEALS A BIT TOO MUCH. AT LEAST YOU SHOULD STOP WATCHING HALF WAY THROUGH.I hope you'll all have a nice sunday!!!

  2. Lizziegreeneyes says I *just* watched the movie yesterday - was *totally* blown away ... the acting in it is so unbelievably real - & my stomach was in knots the entire time. I felt beat-up & drained when it ended. Great post (I was planning on writing about it as well). Ellen Page - she's a powerhouse ... can't wait to see what comes next for her !!!

  7. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says Kevin........this is nothing like the other two movies. This one is painful to watch. Glad you made it home safe from Wisconsin.

  8. Rawkkiddoh says Still going to have to watch, the plot line seems interesting, even if its a bit taboo

  9. Lizziegreeneyes says Me & the Horse ... painful doesn't even begin to _cut_ it ... but yes, Teach, you need to see it, feckin brilliant. I didn't like The Squid & the Whale (but I may not have been in the right head - that happens to me sometimes). I *adore* Jeff Daniels, think he is one of the *most* under-rated stars out there ... his bathroom scene in Dumb & Dumber alone should have given him the Poopscar ... alas, it was not meant to be. Punch Drunk - great flick ... though I prefer Adam Sandler in Spanglish ... for me, more real. Last King of Scotland, it ticks me off that James McEvoy doesn't get any press for it - he's a golden god in that film - sure Forrest is pure genius, no doubt - he ALWAYS has been & will be, but how can we not give props to a guy who can stand up next to him (all 6'3" of him) & still be a force to be reckoned with - ok, so maybe I get lost in his eyes and accent, but I still love him - he's another of my boyfriends. My friend says I have to pick 5 & that's all ... I say, till I get a "real" one, I can have as many as I want ... care to comment ??? ;)

  11. Mike the Knife says Horsey, you chose to watch three of the most brutal and disturbing films of the past few years. You are made of stern stuff, man! And I'll second what Lizzie said about Ellen Page. Phenomenal (and Patrick Wilson is equally impressive in "Hard Candy"). But what comes next for Page already came. She was Kitty "Shadowcat" Pryde in the overblown-yet-shrugworthy "X-Men 3" - the least of the trilogy - and, despite a paucity of screen time, she was probably the best thing about it after McKellen and Stewart.

  12. annieander says I saw this movie a while ago. Thanks for the video post. It is an excellent film and worth seeing. Really, REALLY, good acting, and a twist at the end to boot. BTW, I visited Copenhagen years ago, and loved the city. Enjoy your "Vacation". I'll be in Scotland in a month, and am excited to get back to the European atmosphere (eventhought the dollar to pound is 2 for 1).

  13. Lizziegreeneyes says Ok, two things ... I can have *as many boyfriends as I want, Kevin*a ... I never sait I was _exclusive_ with any of them ... & I'm single & in my 30s - have you *_never_* seen Sex in the City ... I'll give you a refresher course if it's necessary ! I know Mike - I guess I must have _blocked_ that one out ... I haven't even seen the first two - not even the trailers - not even when they were free on Horrible Body Odor. (I did hear she was noteworthy in the role) ! So what I meant to say was ... I can't wait to see what's next for her that I would want to go see & that stretches her acting chops the way Hard Candy obviously did. & good call on Patrick Wilson - you almost feel sorry for him _*almost*_. I went out & rented Little Children the following day ... said in unison as 1/2 of the _Men On_ Blaine Edwards ... *Hated It*. Ok, I didn't hate it ... I thought the acting in it was great - I hated that f'ing voice over - the endless drone of some blecchy goober-butt - it never stopped - it drove me INSANE !!!

  14. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I loved Little Children. Didn't get annoyed by the voice-over. There's a german movie out called "The Lives of Others". That's a great movie. Won the Oscar for best Foreign Language Film.

  15. Lizziegreeneyes says All over that like brown on rice (I prefer it to the bleached variety). Have you seen the trilogy, Bleu, Blanc & Rouge ??? Juliette Binoche ... total woman crush on her ... Another favorite - City of Lost Children, plus composer Angelo Batalamenti writing the score ... now that's some good stuff !

  16. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I've been circling Bleu, Blanc & Rouge since they came out..............but never seen any of them. I will get that part done..........and check out City of Lost Children.

  17. Lizziegreeneyes says follow/see them in that order ... Bleu, Blanc then Rouge ... very important to see them in the correct order - Bleu will rip your heart out - J Binoche is luminous in it ! Blanc has such a tweaked & twisted storyline - Julie Delphy in that one, & Rouge (that I won't say anything about). Speaking of Julie Delphy - you've seen Before Sunrise / Before Sunset - right ??? If not - add that you your list as well. I am especially fond of Before Sunset ... both are such fantastic character studies & such a unique storyline, plus, I love trapsing around Europe with them ... Some of those small side streets in Paris, I swear I've walked ... City of Lost Children - it's out there in such a fantastic & fantastical way ... I have to add that to my netflix - I haven't seen it in AGES ... I was a sophomore in college ...

  19. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I'm not too familiar with the Blonde Redhead catalogue.....but I like the Misery is a Butterfly album.
