MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

My Secret Santa has been good to me

Posted about 1 year ago
My secret santa turned out to be Bill (Ivylander). I knew this before I received my package. Of course........this is not the way it works but Bill was worried that his letter had gotten lost. He told me that he had made me a mix. A mix that would get me out of my box. OUT OF MY BOX???????????????????????? Well okay............I've been spending the last year surrounded by white indie-boys. I admit that. I must say that I got very curious..........and when the mix arrived I spent one morning listening while having breakfast. This is one great mix. Bill should make a living making movie soundtracks. This was the feeling I got. I only knew one out of 21 songs. Donny Hathaway's "Someday We'll All Be Free". I knew that he would add some spanish/portuguese songs and I was really looking forward to that since I'm not too familiar with those artists. Before revealing the tracklist and talk about specific songs I need to say that I have been playing this mix continuously since I received it. It's growing on me. Also.............my wife loves this. The first song blew me away. "Ai Mouraria" by Amalia Rodrigues. Such a beautiful song. Merle Haggard followed. This reminded me of winter days in Copenhagen listening to country records. I haven't done so for a few years. "Sing Me Back Home" took me right back.A story by Scottish poet Ivor Cutler really got to me. Such a beautiful story. A nice treat to have a story like that trown into a mix. “Calypso Be” by Young Tiger makes me want to sing and dance. Bottom line………………..I love this mix and I am thankful that it’s mine. You definitely got me out of my box Bill. Santa’s Mixed Bag (tracklist):01. Ai Mouraria by Amalia Rodrigues02. Sing Me Back Home by Merle Haggard03. God Don’t Like It by Sister Rosetta Tharpe04. 1. amber says i knew Santa would come for you! Since I don't know any of the music (but I do know who Merle Haggard is), I'll have to take your word for the greatness of the mix but I can clearly see the greatness of MOG love. Way to go, Bill!

  2. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I felt the same way. I looked at the tracklist and it felt great not knowing any songs. They all sounded great from first listen. That why I mentioned soundtracks. These songs that come out of nowhere but become instant classics.

  5. ivylander says I'm so happy it's still growing on you, Henry. If I may be permitted one of those tiresome there-are-two-kinds-of-people-in-this-world categorizations, there are two kinds of people in this world: those who get excited when they see a mix CD containing a bunch of songs they don't know, and those who become faintly nauseous. Thank God MOG is filled with people like you, who fit into the first description....

  7. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says You're making a point here Bill. Depending on the receiver you can either be a good santa or a bad santa. This received says that you're one of the good santas.

  8. ivylander says Actually, Henry, at the risk of sounding like a brown-nose, it says more about the receiver than the giver.

  9. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says It's a combination.............let's agree on that.

  13. Lizziegreeneyes says Hey Bill.. I live way closer than Henry... got love for this Philly girl... I'd adore a mix where I knew very few of the artists on the mix... then again I would adore a mix from you ;) Nothing like being stumped by a friend :)

  14. Zeroskilz says Henry, you are cracking me up with the "can we agree on that". :) It was a great movie; one I look forward to seeing again.

  15. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says It really is a great movie....................The way Owen Wilson orders food on behalf of the others is just so damn funny. Lizzie: You might live closer than me...........but I am bigger than you are!!!!

  18. kristiana says I too was the lucky recipient of an Ivy mix - I see we ended up with 5 of the same artists, though differing songs in some cases. I was only familiar with 4 of the artists on mine, so yeah, it was an interesting refreshing aural caress. That Solomon Burke tune was an instant favorite. Didn't I tell ya Bill was great? ;)

  19. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says No...........you told me that Bill was a major asshole!!! Just kidding. Yes.........you did tell me. You only had good things to say about Bill. It's funny though because the Solomon Burke song is probably the only song on the mix that I'm not too crazy about.

  21. Me and the Horse I Rode In On says I wasn't saying that something might be wrong with you. Just a coincidence that you mention the one song that I'm not crazy about. I mean................haven't seen this happen before. My favorite is the Amalia Rodrigues song. Not only is the song really beautiful.....it's also followed by a Merle Haggard song. While listening to her song these two thoughts are having a drink in my mind............."Wow............what a beautiful song" and "Isn't it just great that the Merle Haggard song is up next".

  22. ivylander says Actually, what Lizzie no doubt that was that I was a minor asshole....
