I was having a chat with a friend online last night about music, in specific new music. He was complaining that there is nothing new these days, all bands sound like bands from 30 years ago and you're better off just listening to the old stuff.
I argued that if I only listen to and enjoy old music I wouldn't be able to go to any gigs as bands that were doing their thing 30 years ago are mostly split up, retired or sadly no longer with us. I then went into a bit of tirade (possibly induced by said friend insulting Maximo Park and other current indie bands that I like) along the lines of it’s all very well to listen to older music and I have absolutely nothing against it but that wasn’t my time. My time is now and I still like new music even if it does sometimes sound like classic band x meets classic band y hashed with classic band x. No new band is going to change the world like say, The Beatles or Pink Floyd did but that’s understandable because it’s just not possible to create truly new music when so much has come before. It’s as if he refuses to like anything new on the basis that it’s not 100% original and that infuriated me.
I embrace new music, I enjoy it like I’ve never heard anything quite like it with a real passion. He maintains he’d rather sit around listening to the originals and reject pretty much anything new making me feel like it’s some sort of crime to like a band that have only just started their careers.
This caused to me to realise that the day I stop liking new music is the day I’m officially old and quite honestly I’m dreading it!
p.s. the song I have uploaded is one of the best new songs I've heard in a while, I bought the album on the strength of this track.

Narrowmindedness is a curse, and it plagues many. In all walks of life it has absolutely no benefit, especially music. To disregard something without thought or reason is pointless, as is claiming 'nothing is as good as it used to be'. As you say, it doesnt matter all that much if a new band shows its influences through the music, after all, all art is influenced by something, or someone, even the Beatles and Pink Floyd were influenced by others, it cannot be helped.
I know that i will never see the day that i fall out of love with music. For music is immortal, and ever changing, ever growing. I cannot imagine anything better than hearing as much new music as i can before i die.
