Rudebox has got to be the strangest album of the year

Posted over 2 years ago
There are just so many odd and amusing things to this album. Besides the perverse attempts at rapping and the two highly indulgent autobiographical tracks toward the end the album, there's "Bongo Bong," which sounds like Robbie Williams's tribute to Gorillaz, but featuring complete gibberish vocals before switching to French halfway through. And then there are two songs that are effectively Pet Shop Boys songs, just that Robbie happens to be the singer. "We're the Pet Shop Boys" is such a brilliant theme song, I don't know why they didn't appropriate it for themselves and play it live. "She's Madonna" is equally catchy and the kind of thing that's so cheeky PSB would have never gotten away with releasing it themselves. "Kiss Me" sounds even more obnoxiously like the 80's then the track that follows and which is actually called "The 80's"And yet, altogether it's a lot of fun, and has some of the best songs he's had since the first couple of albums. Robbie clearly has stopped caring what people think, and any attempts by the label or producers to stop him from making such a silly album are non-existent. I hope his next is equally unhinged.

  1. Scarlett Echo says I think "unhinged" is a perfect word for Rudebox. Robbie Williams is one of my guilty pop pleasures and I eagerly awaited his latest album. But, damn, when I gave it a listen, I immediately trashed it. Seriously, it was the biggest *WTF????!!!*! albums of the year for me. I was so thoroughly disappointed. However, I have faith that Robbie will come around again and please me, so it's ok. Glad you liked it, though. :)
