This has been on my must-get-round-to-posting list for some time. It's Zakir Hussain playing a very fine solo. The 'Alla' in the title is his father, Alla Rakha.I don't really get on with Bill Laswell's take on world music, but this track is fairly free from interference. I didn't like the synthy drone and unnecessary bass on this album, and I still can't be bothered with most of it. But I now appreciate the drone as an analogue of the tanpura - indeed, it may be a heavily processed tanpura. There's certainly some of the real thing in there. This track shines bright. I've heard Zakir play this live. It really is just one guy and two drums. There's about 11 minutes of this. Stick with it. You will be astonished.

  1. MusikMagik says This is a fun album. Zakir is incredible here, as you say. But I like some of the other electronica-ified tracks too. Your mate Trilok Gurtu is on this CD somewhere if I recall :-) Thanks for the post.

  3. ciphermedia says Have been listening to the 'Live in San Francisco at Stern Grove' album a lot just recently, and these guys are just amazing. Personally, I love the Bill Laswell influence, but I really like my genres fused & fucked around with lots.
