friday random ten, 2002 edition

Posted over 2 years ago

1. Nelly, "Hot in Herre." We're getting close enough to the present that the songs don't feel quite like oldies any longer. Still, I imagine a lot of people hear songs like this and think "that was when I was X years old."

2. Paul Oakenfeld, "Zoo York." One of the better Lux Aeternas.

3. Emma Caulfield and Nicholas Brendon, "I'll Never Tell." The Buffy musical was the year earlier, but the soundtrack album came out in 2002. The video replaces the actors with people from the Sims.

4. Missy Elliott, "Work It." See #1 above.

5. Norah Jones, "Don't Know Why." The perfect crossover artist, talented and safe.

6. Justin Timberlake, "Cry Me a River." See #4 above.

7. Johnny Cash, "Hurt." One of the greatest music videos of all time.

8. Avril Lavigne, "Sk8er Boi." Not bad, in fact this track is great, but she isn't exactly Pink since then.

9. Bruce Springsteen, "Mary's Place." Turn it up!

10. Sleater-Kinney, "Sympathy." These last two are the 9/11 songs of the list. On this last song from their penultimate album, Corin begs God to make her son safe. After one more album, the band went on hiatus. Janet joined another band, Carrie became a writer and filmmaker, and Corin? She's taking care of those kids, which should surprise no one hearing her sing "Sympathy," arguably her finest performance.
