friday random ten, 1971 edition

I still have Bruce on my mind, so this will be another short one.

1. The Temptations, "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)." The early 70s were a great time for soul/R&B, and it starts right here.

2. Carole King, "It's Too Late." You know, I used to think that Little Eva was really Carole King recording under a pseudonym. Listen to "Locomotion" some time and tell me I didn't have a point.

3. Melanie, "Brand New Key." For those of you who think hippies went away after the 60s.

4. Paul & Linda McCartney, "Smile Away." I can smell your feet a mile away.

5. James Brown, "Make It Funky." What better place to listen to JB than on Soul Train?

6. Ten Years After, "I'd Love to Change the World." I've never quite understood this song ... what's Alvin Lee complaining about, exactly? "Everywhere is freaks and hairies, dykes and fairies. Tell me where is sanity? Tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more." Still, the acoustic part is gorgeous, and the usual hot-shit gee-tar part is hot shit.

7. The Dramatics, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get." See #1.

8. Bill Withers, "Ain't No Sunshine." See #1. Withers is underrated, it seems to me.

9. The Rolling Stones, "Wild Horses." The Rolling Stones still mattered at the beginning of the 70s. They had one more album to go after this one.

10. Ike & Tina Turner, "Proud Mary." Because they never ever do nothin' nice and easy:

Motown was such a soundtrack through the 60s and 70s, but in my memory it's The Tempts that put the face to it (along with The Supremes). Damn, Eddie Kendricks has (had) a beautiful voice.

Ten Years After....Alvin Lee used to live about 10 miles up the road from where I am now in the perfect rock star country mansion. "Tax the rich"? He had tennant farmers on his estate, for god's sake. Of course, it was his wife who ran the business.
