Isaac Hayes-styled funk

Posted about 4 years ago
Isaac Hayes, along with David Porter, was responsible for about 165% of Stax Records' brilliant output in the 60s. Without those Stax records, the world would be a not-as-good place. Along those lines, the world just might be a tad less funky without Isaac Hayes' 1969 album Hot Buttered Soul. The whole album is tremendous, but "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" is the tune that most mesmerizes me. It is most likely the only song ever recorded that not only contains "modus operandi" and "medulla oblongata" as lyrics, but they're layered perfectly over the rhythm as well. The grooviest part of this song, starting at roughly 3 1/2 minutes in and lasting for five minutes, is the most stripped down — merely bass, drums and Hayes' piano (and the occasional "uh!" or "ow!" from Isaac). Then some guitar decides to meander back in for the final minute. A segment of this piano solo was sampled by Public Enemy and used in their "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos". I always dug on that little piano riff from the PE tune, and then I later discovered that it was Isaac's piano riff. "Well, at least PE rips off quality stuff," I thought. Enjoy the entire 9 1/2 minutes!!
