Cover songs anyone? -McCall

Posted about 1 year ago

Hello everyone! Its about 12 oclock in the afternoon and i just arrived at Brian and Brent's apartment after our weekly Thursday meeting at Another Place Sandwich shop. This weeks meeting we mainly talked about our upcoming shows and how to snazz them up a bit to be more audience friendly.

Theres always a disagreement between teh band about doing cover songs or "copy songs" as Jim Goodwin calls them! I think that when a band is just starting to get out there (much like us) they should always throw in several relativley popular cover songs. It keeps the audience interested especially if all of the bands music is unfamiliar to the audience. Plus, its fun to perform songs that i enjoy listening to at live shows! But Brian in particular hates doing covers (well hate is a strong word, he doesn tlike it much). We always get into arguments or more so, tiffs, about what covers to do or wether to do any. BUT TO WRAP THIS RAMBLE UP, we're going to start to attempt to throw a couple more popular cover songs into our sets. It works well at shows like Woodhaven Country club because the people are used to cover bands playing there, not original music.

We're also playing at the Gas Light Festival out in J-town and i'm pretty excited about it! I've gone to it several years before and had a great time. My aunt Connie and Uncle Joe live out in Jtown so they always go to the festival.

well, i'm off to check up on all of my band websites! After three hours of working on teh computer today i think we're also going to practice for our show tomorrow. This will be a looonngg day!

Peace,
McCall Alicen Cruse

Cover Songs,  the timeless question.  To me,  once a band has esteablished a reputation, a definable "sound",  its often entertaining to hear them do someone else's work.  Sometimes a good cover can reveal aspects of a song unnoticed in the original.  When**Sonic Youth** does The Carpenter's "Superstar", the young girl's infatuated lament is transformed into a psycho's reverie.  Friggin' brilliant.

Now having said all of that,  I hold all "tribute bands/acts" in contempt.

Well then, how about the greatest Cover Girl no one outside of Washington D.C. had ever heard of? I'm speaking of Eva Cassidy, who, if she did write a song, didn't record it, preferring to do genre-hopping covers throughout her (short) life.

You could do worse than Bruce Hornsby, once known as a Grateful Dead cover artist. If doing Billy Joel "puts bread in your jar," play on. If the spirit moves ya, there's always the "Newman Does Nilsson" approach to get it out of your system before moving on to "Political Science."
