In about a month I will be heading out east on a 12 day road trip with Heather. (my wife) Major cities we will be hitting along the way include:
Chicago Cleveland Pittsburgh Philadelphia Virginia Beach D.C.
What I need to know from you East Coasters is a what are the must stop record stores with a great vinyl selections in the above listed cities. I am looking for stores that would have a great selection of new and used vinyl if possible. Good indie and reggae selections are mandatory. :)
I also would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for keeping the vinyl i purchase cool and not warped. At this point I think I may just bring some record shipping cardboard boxes that I have saved. As I buy stuff I would just send it back to my house in the mail so I will not have to deal with leaving the records in a potentially hot car for several hours. I also thought of bringing a cooler and then putting the records "on ice". (wrapped in plastic and what naught to keep them dry)
I also plan on having a beer with Lizzie in Philadelphia. Will anyone be around the Philly area around May 20th give or take a few days? May 21st is my one year Moggiversary. :)

I dunno exactly where it is in Wisconsin, but if Toad Hall is still around you must go. Its in a very small town in Eastern Wisconsin. It is a large Victorian mansion, filled from attic to basement with LP's...In genre and alpha order!

Between Chicago and Cleveland... if you are going to swing though Ann Arbor (which is on the way, unless you shoot across indiana and ohio) there is Encore Records and Underground Sounds (which both are on Liberty)... and also the Arbor Brewing Company and Grizzly Peak for your beer needs..

What? No New England?

Is there enough room for me in the trunk?
Anyway, I wish I could be a bit more helpful, but as you know, record stores from East Coast ain't my thing..
Oh oh, be sure to give Lizzie one big hug for me! Hope you and Heather have a nice & safe trip ::hugs::

Cody. I will be swinging through Milwaukee at my brother in law's house. Is it by Milwaukee?
Eric. The trip from Milwaukee to Cleveland will be done straight through. Most likely later in the evening so I doubt we will get off 80 until Cleveland. I will keep it in mind though because we do like to wing it a bit so it is not impossible. Thanks for the beer suggestions as well.
Jeff. Nope. Not this time. We were hoping to make it further north but we opted for turning south at Philly to go to Dogfish Head brewing in Delaware and then to Virginia Beach so we can go over that 20 mile bridge that goes under water and stuff. Maybe next time.
Andrea. Nope, no room in the trunk. We have a roof rack though. You could ride on the roof. I will be sure to give Lizzie a hug for you. I look forward to the day we can toast beer filled mugs and tell gross poop stories to each other in person. Maybe we could have a poop exchange some day. ;)

Roof rack, aye? Sweet... "Maybe we could have a poop exchange some day." Well, I believe I have your address... may I? (muahahah)

it would be a bit of a detour, but I assure you, you will be blown away. At this point they say they have 3 buildings full of stuff. When I went last time, I picked up Shuggie Otis-Inspiration,Information for 10 bucks, mint condition. They are no rubes, so you won't steal anything, but it is a vinyl junkies wet dream.
Just a short hop up the jersey TPKE is the Princeton Record Exchange..it is out of your way, a little bit, but if you go there I'll meet you for sure. Great Hoagie Shop near there and we could prolly get Ivy to come too. I've met up with him there before.
Not that seeing you wouldn't be cool, but if I had to pick one, I'd go to Toad Hall..

Cody. Thanks for the info. That might be a bit out of the way. But I make it down that way enough that I could see going there at some point.
Andrea. Your shit don't stink does it?

Not much advice here, except for some regarding Lizzieness........ Don't give her any wine after 21:00, do let her smoke if she wants to and squeeze her a bit for me mwuahhahaha :D
My Trusted MOGs
once you are done getting advice, will you please post this ? i think it's a greta idea !
My Trusted MOGs
Anna. you are so kind to leave me some insight to Lizzie. Keep in mind that no-one is allowed to consume wine in my presence. I will have her so wound up on beer she will think I am you.
breathmint. i will be sure to report back next month with where i end up going.

In DC: there is a place called Orpheus records. At least, htere was two years ago. A pretty huge selection. Can't guarantee the indie or reggae, but the store carries a lot of stuff and I have been plenty pleased there. Don't have the exact address on me. If you need to, I can find it somewhere.
And I think you missed something on your itinerary; you forgot to mention that after the mid atlantic states you were going to swing southeast to Charleston. when can I expect you??!! :-)

I will look it up Chuck. I will be in DC for two days visiting my brother in law. I am sure I will get a chance to look it up assuming it is still there in town. I found an Orpheus Records in Arlington, VA. It looks like they are closing in May so I might miss it. Plus most of their stuff is on sale now so even if it was still open things might be a little picked over. I am sure I will find some places. If I have enough time I may still go over there though. Maybe I can get some last day sale thing or something.
I just checked the proximity of Charleston to Virginia Beach and I am pretty sure that will not be happening as much as I would like it to be able to. We will be there for two days so you could drive up and hang out with us. :)

tempting, tempting. My sister lives in the DC area, so that's not unreasonable, really. However, with school (and my night school job, being busy as heck in May) it's probably not in the cards right now. Sucks.
I had no idea Orpheus was going out of business. that absolutely sucks. I wonder if it will still be there by the time you get there? If so, I might have to get you to pick up some records for me!
On the way out, there is a store called Missing Link in Indianapolis. It ain't the biggest or best, but it still has a wide selection of vinyl. Again, I can't vouch for the non prog merchandise there.
I second the comment above, that you need to make a post listing all of these for future reference. In fact, I wonder what it would take to get a nationwide MOG list of record stores to go to?
hmmm . . .

if you're taking I-95 between DC and Virginia Beach, try Plan 9 [LINK] in Richmond. i've never been, so i can't vouch for it personally, but it looks like a solid place. plus, if you've never been to Richmond, i'd recommend passing through. it's a pretty place, especially in the spring. Also, on the east side of Cleveland, not too far off of I-90 is Beachland Ballroom [LINK]. they apparently have a vintage clothing/record store called This Way Out in the basement. i've never been to the store, so i can't vouch for that, but judging by the shows i've been to at place, i bet the store is worth a look. have a great trip!

Chuck. Bummer we can't hook up and party down. Oh well. I wonder why Record Stores are not here on MOG? They should be. We would be a prime group to market to.
brz. Thanks for the insight. Assuming I still have a music money budget by the time I pass by Richmond I will be stopping at Plan 9 for sure. Thanks for the heads up.

If I correctly read your other tags, what you've set out to do is: Have an east coast MOG-meet to share some beer and poop???
I'm all in favour of your motion, Marigold Sir.

Michael. Your ability to cut through the bull poop laden tag lines is a feat of only your capable mind. :P
