MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(204)

We Made The Team (Single) 3:28

From Labrador Records site: We Made The Team« is the new mp3 single by The Radio Dept. The song has been a work in progress since july but the band´s recent visit to London inspired them to finish it and release it immidiately. It's a lazy skank, high on petrol fumes, scottish lager and cream tea.

Last summer I was just going along minding my own business when out of the blue I get attacked by the not so evil EMCD bug. While mogging around I stumbled onto one of Dale’s old posts for the The Radio Dept. and at first listen I was intrigued enough to add them to my list.

Fast forward a few months later when I got my hands on Lesser Matters. I was instantly drawn into the obvious lo-fi shoegazery and distortion. However they tweak it enough with the electronic drum machine sounds and sugary smooth vocals to make it connect to my soul. There is not a bad song on the album.

Pet Greif is a bit more mellow and atmospheric and benefits a little from the better production quality. It is a little bit heavier on the electronic parts of their sound. In a lot of ways there is a decent amount progression in their overall sound. I could see how depending on your tastes in music it could be considered a step back.

Most of their discography (2 LPs and several EPs) accomplish one thing that I have always been drawn to in music. …What is it that Mike has been drawn to in music you may ask? Well, let me tell you. I have always loved when a band can accomplish the feat of sounding loud and chaotic while at the same time sounding mellow and relaxing. Bands that achieve this can somehow always fit my moods. The Radio Dept. never disappoints no matter how my day is going.

Anyways, I said all that to say this. According to their Myspace site they will be releasing a new record in May. No date as of yet, but who cares at least we know that something is going to be available soon!

It's Personal Pet Grief 3:36

I could wake up to this song everyday for the rest of my life and maybe be ok with it.

I hate when it does that, but I dig the slow build on It's Personal..talk about a soothing sound. I could see getting a lift out o' that one, easing your way into the real world.

Cody, I will never get tired of the dynamics of crescendo.

I like "It's Personal" better.. (really love the soothing crescendo and that lovely hypnotic keyboard melody - right before the electronic beat kicks in.)

Why Won't You Talk About It Lesser Matters 3:09

This one destroys!!!

Andrea. I am not taking it personal...but I completely agree with you. I mainly posted We Made The Team because it is their latest release and maybe a hint at what some of the new stuff will sound like. I like it a lot but have to say, It's Personal and Why Won't You Talk About It are superior tracks in my opinion.

niceee. Cody's right about the Stereolabbishness. sounds like The Radio Dept. out sipping mango daiquiris in a tropical island. i am afraid they sound happy. but hey, how can you talk about getting laid and not sound happy?

oh, well. still excited!

(bows) I do love doing what I do. muwahahahahaha As many killer tracks as Mike has highlighted, this is the one that slays me every time. I don't know how many times this has appeared on mixes.

Ewan Lesser Matters 2:24

"And you can feel the sunshine fading" ... swoon.

xydnar. Thanks for stopping by.

Dale. Ewan was on the short list. Thanks for the addition. I can't thank you enough for your intro. What are your thoughts on We Made The Team? Are you happy with this direction? I think it is a solid track but I am not totally blown away by it either. Maybe in the context of a whole record it will sound different, but it does not look like this will be part of the new record. It is may just be a tweaner song...who knows?

Dale says:

I like it, but yeah, it's not a killer like some of their other work. I think it got kinda rushed in so it could make Labrador 100, their label's recent compilation (which is absolutely delicious, btw). I remain very excited about the new album.

I figured out recently that there would likely not be any Maps or Ulrich Schnauss or any of the new breed of bed-sit electronic shoegaze without Lesser Matters. If nothing else, I would have to thank The Radio Dept. for that achievement alone.

Mike, we made the team, so if it's personal, why won't you talk about it, your pet grief, that is? hehehe

Why Won't You Talk About It reminds me of The Jesus & The Mary Chain. Like all that I've heard so far especially since I'm a sucker for shoegeezer music!

"It's a lazy skank, high on petrol fumes, scottish lager and cream tea." Ha! Great description, Mike!

Dale. Thanks for the thoughts on the track.

August. The Jesus & The Mary Chain? It sounds like I will need to check them out. Are they good?

Colin. ha. I wish I would have came up with that one. I am not sure my brain is capable of such a feat.

Sorry to be late to the party...

I copied the lazy skank line but see that someone already used that for their comment...go figure!

But I liked the things you came up with too! Like this... "However they tweak it enough with the electronic drum machine sounds and sugary smooth vocals to make it connect to my soul."

And this... "I have always loved when a band can accomplish the feat of sounding loud and chaotic while at the same time sounding mellow and relaxing. Bands that achieve this can somehow always fit my moods." Not your talking my talk!

Love the tune up top! Great post! Taking note and coming back for a thorough listen to all the others. Thanks MariG (and Dale)!

I finally got clued into 'Lesser Matters' last year ... love this band. And I like the new lazy skank even if she is a wee bit lightheaded. :)

Marigold says:

who is a new lazy skank?

I should have said "it" instead of "she" ... I meant the song.
