He said YES!

Posted over 3 years ago

I was in Duluth's Electric Fetus last week and the record store clerk dude had some tunes on the stereo. No, really he did. At first I was oblivious to what was going on musicwise in the place. After a while, the vocal harmonies crept out of the darkness of my consciousness bringing the hidden to life. Well, suffice to say. After a while I started wondering where I have heard such wonderful voices before. We are talking frustating thoughts of wondering for countless seconds. All the while destroying the "P" section in the vinyl sale bin, (scored Primal Scream's Scremadelica for a screamworthy deal btw) I realized that it may be the new Animal Collective that I had started reading some chatter about as of late. While checking out with my new goodies, I asked the clerk if the tunes on the stereo was Animal Collective. His answer was yes.

Congratulations!  I'm so happy for You.  LOL.

Animal Collective is a maddening band to me....Flashes of brilliance....even long strtches of brilliance....punctuated by self-indulgent crap that would embarress Eugene Chadbourne.

wasn't it like 20 below zero last week up there because we had single digits below zero here in st paul, I've only gone there in the summer.

Jeff. I agree. I think if they dialed back the insanity a few notches they would be up there more for me. Just when I love some hook or vocal harmony, they crap on it. I guess thats the point with their music aye?

I have found their music up to this point un-listenable. While the new record has a ton of brilliance for me it also completely loses me at times though. Maybe it one won't end up in the scrap heap this time. We shall see.

CPetersonart3. (say that ten times fast) Yeah. It was New Years eve day and alking around on Superior St was blazing cold. We stuck to the skyway system whenever possible. The beer from Pizza Luce kept our bellies warm though so I can't complain. I'm back home in the balmy Minneapolis now. Feinding to use my 15% off coupon for Electric Fetus. Looks like I will be stopping this week. Who knows, maybe another story will unfold..

Kevin. It is a bit crazy isn't it. I have really been out of the music loop for the last 2 weeks with all the holiday activity. It actually still didn't really hit me that there was all this hype until today when I saw how many people posted about this record today. lol.

Augustusness. Thanks for the link. I will check it out. A guy on the side for me? That would be gay. :P

    Destroying the "P" section?

Well you should have been more careful, or you wouldn't have missed Panda Bear's "Person Pitch" (so that's triple-P, then).

AC with (maybe, depending on hoy you want to look at it) a few notches less of madness. And actually well into classic pop territory.

Still, give MPP a couple more tries before giving up.

    Best

lol. emit. It's a pretty small shop up in northern Minnesota so the sale bin is not the best. I didn't see Panda Bear while destroying the non-sale "P" area either for the ...record. (sorry couln't help myself).

Not sure whats different with the new AC but when I was at the record shop it did kind of hook me when I heard it. The jury is still out for me on this release, but after few full listens it might actually have some staying power. I have not given up.

    Hahahahaha, Marigold,

I was speaking figuratively - maybe stretching out the metaphor a bit, admitedly, not every single record shop should stock on Panda Bear's stuff, in fact, most don't.

But I like the way you describe how their vocal harmonies and melodies tend to creep up on one, I think most of us  "got" Animal Collective in a similar context.

There's definitely some Beach Boys influence in the vocal harmonies I'm noticing. Maybe some Crosby Stills Nash & Young too.

emit. I realized that, but I had to get my for the record comment in. I was willing to do or say anything to achieve it.

Yeah, those vocal harmonies are really something else. If one loves pop music I would think anyone was deaf not to hear the beauty in them.

Augustusness. Totally getting the BB vibe.

Mikey, i'll have to agree with deadmandeadman about Animal Collective - bursts of brilliance coupled with self-indulgence. still, it makes the music engaging and i ain't turning away.

go destroy that P so P. Diddy can wreak no more havoc. ;d

Ilay. As a former AC hater, I feel the pull with this new record and you know you can't ignore that feeling when it hits ya.

How am I doing so far? I made a post and a few comments. I've already navigated my first MOG hiccup and I'm still here. :)
