Yeah Yeah! for Spiritualized's Songs in A & E

Posted about 1 year ago
I have to admit being skeptical that the new Spiritualized would be good. Not only is it good, I would maybe say it is even great. J Spaceman (Jason Pierce) nails it with this one. Songs in A & E drips thoughts and emotions of pain, suffering, hope and joy while screaming frailty. It really seems to capture his recent near death experience. I can't help but feel encompassed by the sincerity that falls from this record. It is still early but this could easily become one of my favorite albums this year. ..now I just need to score myself a vinyl copy of it.

  2. Bartleby says The "Yeah Yeah" cut is very redolent of "Subterranean Homesick Blues" not only for Mr Pierce's delivery. The second track is just wicked because your new avatar made me hesitate where to click (you're an evil zombie, Mike!!!) Thanks for the heads up.

  5. Anna says I click on this new improved big red play button, and I keep ending up on some dude's MOG page, what is going on? I'm scared! ;P "recent near death experience" What happened to him, Mike? Thanks for the sonical taste! Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in red buttons.

  6. Marigold says Chuck. Thanks for checking them out anyways. It was not my intention to create havoc initially but Michael pointed it out in another post and I just decided to run with it. :) Anna. Gotcha! :P Here is an excerpt from Spiritualized's Myspace page: *Jason explains. “The idea was to record and put the record out quick, but then I became ill. I had double pneumonia. I had legionnaires’ disease or something, so...I was quite ill, it took it out of me.” At his lowest ebb, Jason spent a couple of weeks in intensive care. “I lost weight,” he says. “I was in a bad way for a few months. It was a big gap in the making of this record, it was a big thing to get through, and to get over.”* You can read the entire bio here, ( http://www.myspace.com/spiritualized )

  7. Dale says If that new avatar doesn't drive people to your page, I don't know what will. Having some Spiritualized on tap won't hurt either. Very nice.

  9. Marigold says I am not sure what the deal is with the avatar not loading and just showing the file name. It as frustrating for me as it is frustrating for everyone to keep "accidentally" going to my MOG home page. :)

  10. Bartleby says You know, Mike. I think I'm really jealous of your red-button. I wish I'd come up with the idea before you!!! avatar Here's more details about how Jason Pierce died twice in 2005: "Just over a year ago, Spiritualized frontman Jason Pierce was performing in London with Patti Smith when he began to feel ill. At first he thought nothing of it. "I was wasted, but I feel wasted quite often," he observes - but soon realised this was different. As he found himself struggling to breathe, he was rushed to the accident and emergency department of Whitechapel hospital. Pierce was diagnosed with double pneumonia. Both his lungs had filled with liquid. During the course of his illness, his weight plunged to seven stone and, technically, he died twice." (full story in the Guardian here)

  12. Augusts1 says Loving the new album. It's so amazing, emotional & intimate. Great stuff. It's made me check out his stuff w/Spacemen 3 too, since I never heard any of it.

  13. brainofj says this is really good. The depth he has found in this is impeccable. thanks!

  14. Marigold says August. What are you thinking of the Spacemen 3 stuff? I also was not familiar with his S 3 stuff until recently. It has not caught on much with me for some reason.

  15. Marigold says Mike. You must check out the record Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space. You just have to. I wish Spiritualized was coming to Minneapolis this tour. Have fun at the show.

  16. Zeroskilz says Interesting. It seems like a Spiritualized fest here recently. I just bought tix for a concert here in Indy. I'd never listened to any Spiritualized before, but The Dirtbombs open for them. After catching a few tunes posted on M, I'm looking forward to seeing Spiritualized too. It appears I have a new album to lookup now also. :)

  17. goodmusiconly says Yup, I love this too, it's a great album. I like the old Spacemen 3 stuff, though I could be biased as I started listening to it in the early 90s when that heavily droning shoegaze stuff was coming out (if I'd heard it for the first time now I might not gravitate toward it so much). If you haven't already and want to give "Sound of Confusion" a shot let me know and I'll hook you up!

  18. Marigold says Erin. That is what I was thinking when I heard the Spaceman 3 stuff. I wondered if I had heard this back in the day I might perceive it better. I only own Perfect Prescription. I have not heard Sound of Confusion..

  19. FluxCapacitor says "Jason spent a couple of weeks in intensive care." Guess that's why the album is called Songs In A(ccident) & E(mergency). Yet he looks remarkably youthful considering he's been on death's door a couple of times. And is it just me, or does Jason like writing about drug-taking?! Look forward to hearing more from this - ta!

  20. Marigold says I think it is fair to say that JP has written a song or two about drug usage. I do get the feeling he is an expert in the subject.

  21. FluxCapacitor says All in the name of song research!
    Permalink posted 06/09/2008
  22. Marigold says he must really get into his research. I wonder if that is part of what is intriguing for me to listen to his music. As someone who has had some mild drug addictions in the past, I sometimes find it somewhat therapeutic listening to his music in the sense that I can relate to his extensive research.

  23. poebegone says Mike, what a treat! the two things that have been exciting me in the last weeks are the new albums by Spiritualized and The Wedding Present. diggin' what i'm hearin'. thanks to August and Britta for hooking me on the uploads, i got my Spiritualized listenathon and now gearing up for Songs In A & E. woo-hoo it's time to go shopping!
    Permalink posted 06/09/2008
  24. Marigold says I have not heard the new Wedding Present. Its sounds like I might need to search it out. good luck with the shopping.

I had to come back to this post. The new MOG makes your avatar such a beauty... I don't think I can't have enough of your red button, Mike. Nor of Spiritualized!!!

(I'd better get cracking on my Spiritualized related post too)

Micahel. Ha, thanks. The red button does reach out and touch doesn't it? I can borrow the botton to you for a while if you like. It might throw people off for a while and be quite funny. I am willing to let you have it if you want it since you post way more then I do. It would get more exposure that is for sure. :) No, Serious..do you want it?

Sunny D. No worries. I can relate. Hey, do you have your notifs off? I don't know why it has not occoured to me to do sooner, but I think I may shut mine off. I always feel bad deleting my trusteds notifs without reading because i can't keep up. It is a shame, but it is crazy hard for me to commit all my time just here keeping up with all of the goings on. Or maybe I wont shut my notifs of. Oh my, what am i to do? I am so confused.

oh, and the "with me in Spiritualized" comment. good one. ;) x infinity + 1

Yep, they're off.  I can't keep up with everything.  So I thought I'd try to keep a steady rotation, I get distracted here or there and feel guilty if I don't catch someone's within a timely manner, but it's a little easier to manage my inbox you know...and I'm getting a few other things done!

    The notification thing...?

If you mean doing what's going on in the picture, sure that's a good idea too...?  I just felt like putting a picture of Jason-Pierce in there, but now that I look at that set up it looks like I'm suggesting that I have more time for smoking... But hey what ever...
