Part 3. (The Turntable - The First Slab)

Posted about 1 year ago
*EDIT* December 13, 2007. Added code for MOG's pre-Rhapsody mp3 player. The box: Delivered 12/4/07.UPS had a delivery for me today and work was pretty busy. The anticipation to get home and set up the new toy was almost too much to bear. Thankfully my boss decided to close the office early due to more snowy/blizzard like conditions. Usually my drive home is never more then 25-30 minutes. Today was bordering on 45-50 minutes. All wanted to do is I just get home. It felt like I was being driven home by the Slowski’s. .The Turntable: Stanton T.90..After setting the player up it was time to select my first slab-o-vinyl. My first option would have been something from The Stone Roses self titled release. Maybe Shoot You Down or Elephant Stone, but since I do not own it on vinyl (yet), I decided to go with the only Stone Roses vinyl I do have. I had bought the Love Spreads single back in my college days in Denver. After I got rid of my record player, I kept the 7” all these years. You know, because it is the Stone Roses. .First Record Played: The Stone Roses, Love Spreads (7’ Single).
.I listened to Love Spreads on my better stereo. The only problem was that my rc cable was not long enough to reach from the back of my amp to the turntable. I ended up having to plug it into a video jack on the front and it did not seem to work that well. I had to turn it up really loud to hear it. I will buy another cord and experiment using the actual phono jack instead next time. .After messing around and setting things up a bit more. I decided to move the turntable to my computer workstation area. I do not have a lot of room in this area so I placed the turntable on top of my receiver. I am not sure that it is a good idea with the heat that it can produce. I will monitor things and consider ways to re-arrange my computer workstation area..Workstation:.I am not sure that I am comfortable with the speaker so close to the turntable. Is that an issue? Any thoughts on setup for a turntable would be appreciated. ..Next project is to figure out how to use this Pyro Software that came with the turntable..Thanks again to Danny for all of your help. :)

  3. Marigold says Betherz. Thanks. I was thinking I was going to be getting a more traditional wood vaneer player but I ended up with this modern looking machine Chuck. Ha. It is Christmas. Maybe you have not put in any requests to the family yet? :) Merry Christmas to you! . I really have to thank all you fellow MOGers for the inspiration to do this. My enjoyment of music has increased ten fold since joining back in May. Thanks.

  4. Augusts1 says No shit Groon, I have TT envy now too! Very nice. And oh what a great inaugural slab of vinyl to initiate it with Mike. "Love Spreads" is such a GREAT song!(what is on the b-side of that 7"? I just have to know now) Btw, The Stone Roses cd is "Second Coming" w/no "The"(I own it & just looked at my copy).

  5. Marigold says August. You just busted a huge Stone Roses fan. I will reload it. Thanks for the catch. The b-side you may ask?.....Your Star Will Shine.

  6. Augusts1 says Hahahaha, I KNOW you are, so that's why I just HAD TO call you on that, especially being a huge SR fan myself. I knew you'd appreciate it, lol. Hmmmm, don't think I've heard the b-side. It's a goodie, no?

  13. soulrocket says really cool, mike. so it was the stone roses your first pick,, thats great. nothing wrong with the turntable close to the speakers. however the turntable shouldnt be on top of the amplifier, all the extra heat coming from the amp will go to the back of your deck, also the extra weight on the amp isnt a god thing.i would suggest a double shelf fixed on the wall to place both the amp & the turntable. glad you are having such a great time, i can relate easily.

  14. FluxCapacitor says Great choice of record, Mike. I literally spent my last fiver in the world on that single. I'd lost my job, and was returning from the Dole office, where they'd just turned down down my benefit application, and I saw it in a mall record store. I opened my wallet and there was _just_ enough money to cover the cost. Worth every penny and then some. I only listen to my sacred Roses collection on Holy Days(!), so it's nice to hear it again. And it's got better with age... Anyway, cool way to christen it. It's a lovely player. I imagine you opened some vintage port and had a fine cigar, too?!

  15. bloodtea says fiiiiuuuuu.... now I know who's house to go to this christmas - that thing's coming with me back home (and that mogwai lp too). do not fear, do not offer resistance.. ;-)

  16. davesonic says Nice TT. You'll think this is funny but I didn't set my system up for a few weeks after getting it because I didn't want it just sitting on the floor or taking up room on our office desk with the computer, so I waited until I had enough spare cash to buy a good unfinished wood cabinet from Ikea, stained it to match my desk, and then set everything up at once. First album AC/DC's Let There Be Rock. I'll send you a picture of my complete setup. (Pre finished) Does your TT have a Line In jack so you can record casstte tapes as well?

  17. Marigold says lucy. A red headed she hulk? I will keep an eye out for you. You shouldnt be hard to spot. August. Great opening track. I am sure a tiebreaker will present itself. Odds on favorite in Vegas is you. Good Luck. Danny. Yep, Stone Roses. I really need to get the Self Titled album from them. Love Spreads seems like a somewhat fitting first song. Maybe not my first SR pick but it will do. I am going to have to do a little bit of re-organizing to get the turntable off of the amp. I am sure I will come up with something though. I pride myself in being a resourceful music nerd. Colin. Thanks for sharing the story on the purchase of the Love Spreads single. I love music purchasing stories. If there was a band to be spending your last coin on it seems fitting to be The Stone Roses. Second Coming has gotten better with age hasn't it. It still does not hold the place in my heart that the self titled does but is carving out a slightly bigger space over the years. I do not have any vintage port around or cigars. I do have plenty of beer though. I did bust out a good beer for the project of putting the turntable together and hooking it up. Andrea. Resistance is futile aye? Well, I hope your spaceship is in good working order. The meteor storms around Uranus are making space travel difficult. Make sure your meteor deflection shield generators are adjusted properly. Be careful. See you in a few weeks!

  18. bloodtea says Aye. My spaceship eats meteor storms for breakfast! and you better have some cookies for me when I get there ;-)

  19. Marigold says davesonic. I do not have the patience to wait two weeks. I have been waiting several months to listen to some rare 7" singles that I got and have never heard. That alone was driving me crazy. I would love to see a picture of your set up. Post the pic on this thread if you want. As for jacks there was a USB, Power, RC and a phone jack? I am not sure what the phone jack was for. I just glanced at it and did not pay much attention. I will investigate more tonight. Andrea. Let me get this straight. You are going to come to my house and steal my turntable and Mogwai record. Is that not enough? Do I need to make you cookies as well?

  28. 1234chainsaw says I'm with Danny: get the TT away from the top of amp and onto a shelf of its own. And make it a shelf that's as sturdy and stable as possible to minimize vibrations from people walking on the floor etc. You need to use the phono jack on your amp because only the phono board pre-amp provides the extra amplification that the low signal coming in from TT (lower than from other source devices like CD-player) requires.

My powerstrip is overloaded. Pekka. I pretty much knew it was a no no when doing it. Things will be fixed. Fixed soon I might add. Thanks for the clarification on the issue I was having with the jacks. I suspected that was the case. Thanks for the insight!

I think you two make a beautiful couple. :-) Hope you can figure out the cable and speaker issues. I think perhaps the TT company owes you some kickback money for creating a boost in it's sales this week. ha!

  37. Doomsayer2001 says Oh just rub it in why don't ya! I got a sweet "classic" record player around here (it's even got a separate unit to add some effects to the playback!) and ton's o vinyl. But I don't have it hooked up (along with my stereo) and we have no record stores around here to buy vinyl any more... (sigh).

  38. Marigold says LMI. Ha. Thanks. Pekka's above comment really helped me figure it out. Now I just need to go and buy me a longer rc cable. I am excited to hear this on the good stereo. Maybe I will have to get two? One for the computer area, one for the living room. hmmmm???? Doom. I promise. I am not doing this to torture you. I really wish you the best. Maybe you should reopen a record store in your area? I promise to swing buy every time I am in your area. :)

  39. davesonic says Hey, here's some pics from my little office set up. As I said this is a nice sturdy but inexpensive unit from Ikea. I just stained it to make it match the old desk we have in our office. This has pretty much music area now as I have the laptop going into the amp as well as the turntable. The cabinet has my old stereo for running cassettes into the line in jack of the turntabel, as well some other odds and ends. Really need to clean that actually. Hope this gives you some ideas for your set up.
