WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Your LOCAL band that nobody is talking about.

Posted about 1 year ago
Meet Halloween, Alaska. They are a Minneapolis local band that is doing some really good music that nobody outside of Minneapolis is talking about. I think they have a little bit of a Postal Service thing going on. Check Halloween, Alaska's cover of LL Cool J's, I Can't Live Without My Radio (A Sunday Cover from Marigold? Ha) I love this video and how it plays on the original song. Here is the original song by LL Cool J.A Halloween, Alaska original.... Links:http://www.halloweenalaska.com/http://www.myspace.com/halloweenalaskaThe drummer David King is not really showcased as much in this band. But I stand by the fact that I consider him to be one of the most talented drummers in America. Check out the band Happy Apple ( http://www.myspace.com/happyapplejerksfor )to hear some indie/jazz drumming insanity. David King is also in the jazz band trio The Bad Plus. *Post a comment on this thread with your local band that we may not know about. Or, make your own post about your local secret. Or do nothing*

  1. 1234chainsaw says Sacramento: Without a doubt, Th' Losin Streaks (that's a link). Fine Nuggets-style garage rock with a superb lead guitarist and Keith Moon style drummer. I've seen them over 20 times, but they've been on a hiatus recently, gigging very irregularly. My old MOG post here.

A nod also to Sarah's band The Phantom Jets, although I still haven't been able to make it to any of their shows.

  2. amber says Oh...I like this post and I like Halloween, Alaska. But only one local band? Posting a comment about 2 or more wasn't one of your options. Well, I guess I'll just be a rebel then. :) I see your Halloween, Alaska and raise you one Palmer, AK. This band is close to my heart because it's a side project of my favorite member of the Lashes, Eric. You may remember my "posts":http://mog.com/amber/blog_post/68777 about him; he's the fellow who severed his spinal column last spring and is now paralyzed from the sternum down. And still shreds like nobody's business with the Lashes. On December 6th, I will see him perform with Palmer, AK for the first time and I can't wait. Here's a video Eric made on his cell phone last week

  3. amber says And then there's "Feral Children":http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=27911309 feral kids These boys are seriously local, since they are graduates of my little town of Maple Valley's high school. They are a little rough, but have a Modest Mouse vibe going and have been playing the Seattle clubs a lot lately. Rumored to put on a great live show, they are on my long list of band's to see soon. They have a rather extensive West Coast Tour going on at the moment which you can see at the link above (click Feral Children), as well as listen to their music.

  4. Marigold says Pekka. I will check your post out and the band link. I love the song you posted. Nice job mentioning Sarah. Where has she been as of late? Must be rocking Sacramento! :) Amber. Very nice. Thanks for sharing the insight as to why these two bands made the cut for your loco....er, I mean local suggestions. :P I am leaning more Palmer, AK for the more put together sound. I see what you are saying about the potential and roughness for Feral Children. Did not mind the songs, but they need a little better singer. Who knows, maybe his voice would grow on me. Either way, great suggestions. Thanks so much.

  5. amber says I think this should be a repeating post...just think of all the local bands that need wide spread love. It also would encourage people to go out and find a local band to post on, thereby supporting our local band communities. Now I know, I have a super advantage being in Seattle but there are amazing artists everywhere, just looking for fans. Bet we could end up on more band guest lists too. :) Great idea for a post, Mike!

  6. Marigold says Feel free to rinse and repeat as necessary Amber. Thanks for contributing on my post. I aggree, You and Pekka might have a slight advantage but it is fun to see what people come up with. I wonder if Dale has a bitchen Wichita band? :)

  8. Marigold says I can not argue with your comment on the video Cynthia. I love the rework and the video itself. The video even has a "Minnesota" look to it.

  9. Augusts1 says The Velvet Teen is a majorly underrated local band here in Cotati, CA who totally kick ass live, here's a vid for their song "Tokyoto" off their latest cd: And another song off an earlier cd:

  10. FluxCapacitor says Lovely sincere reworking, Mike! (I despise "tongue-in-cheek" covers, especially of rap songs - there's something inhently racist in it, I feel.) Great idea for a post, too -- I guess Fight Like Apes were my pick for good local band

  14. HelenMarie says Yes indeed! Halloween, Alaska is "doing some really -good- great music" Love this! (And...I will do nothing for local bands down here) (...honestly I have nothing but will share as soon as I do...hehehe) I'll have to get back on this post to listen to all the other tunes in comments. Good stuff!

  15. Marigold says August. Nice band. They kind of have a classic rock sound that blends well a somewhat current indie rock thing. Cool hybrid of music. I listened to the song and will watch the video when I get home from work today. Colin. Racist? covering rap songs? I guess it depends on the tone and spirit in which the song was done. But that could pretty much be applied to anything today in the worlds obssession with political correctness. Nice call on the Fight Like Apes local band. I enjoyed that post a lot last week. Wegasky. Did you try restarting your computer and then if that does not work, try turning up the volume. ;) madrid. You got it. Dave King is the drum master. Happy Apple is playing next week in town. I want to catch them. Part of it for me is watching him play as well. He just gets so into it. Pat. I am glad you like them. Thanks for stopping in. Sunny H. Florida scene is a little dry aye? I can't wait for Florida to give the world another Limp Bizkit. :P

Sometimes I wish I had a rifle... there is a great band from my city - Mão Morta (portuguese for _Dead Hand_) - *but* everybody talks about them.

  31. madrid spacestation spain says as far as local bands, here is a little known side project of C-Money's ( of John Brown's Body and Slighty Stoopid fame). The Players Incorporated are a group of musicians that rotate through many jazz, funk, r n'b, reggae, and afrobeat bands that are most easy to catch at Matt Murphies Pub in Brookline, though they do find their way into NYC and the rest of the northeast. C-Money adds his trumpeting skills to as he says, redefine his conceptions of hip-hop. i think i should step up and make a post about it, if no one else does "Well worth the listen":pi [pi]http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=21324257

  32. Marigold says Sunny D. Thanks for clearing that up. :P Madrid. One of the songs on the myspace link you posted is from one of his other side bands called 10 Foot Ganja Plant. I am very familiar with that band and they really have a great old school dub/reggae sound. I just included one of their songs in a recent post of mine. ( http://mog.com/Marigold/blog_post/125068 ) It is the third song on the post. Thanks for the tip on C's other stuff. I will be sure to investigate. Thanks a lot.
