WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

MATT&KIM CONCERT! oh and feat. cut copy or whatever...

Posted 9 months ago

I got back from San Francisco last week, what an amazing slice of the U.S. of A!

Green happy stuff seems to fall out of the sky, everyone is surprisingly attractive, and daily life can be easily described as gay. Gay. Gay. Gay. I loved every minute of it. Shout out to Brittanybf, thanks girl for your hospitality! You rule. <3

Unfortunately I missed out on the Cut Copy tour with Matt & Kim and DJ:Knightlife out in San Fran. But, I got my second chance here in Boston at the new House of Blues on Lansdowne St. (Formerly Avalon)

Watch this turn sour: what was once voted as America's Best Nightclub has been reduced to odd decorative quilts and ugly oil paintings better suited for a TGI Fridays. Sad.

ANYWAY

Brittany actually introduced me properly to Matt & Kim, and I was interested in seeing their live performance. WOW. Nothing short of amazing! The most appropriate word to describe their whole performance was something I picked up in SF: HYPHY.

Matt & Kim were all smiles the whole time and their performance was killer! Best songs of the night were 'Yea Yeah' and 'Daylight' from their first album to their newer stuff off the GRAND album such as 'Good Ol' Fashion Nightmare'.

Kim's dad was even on stage watching; it was touching how supportive he was! Especially when Kim admitted on stage her big secret! She confessed: she used to sneak out at night to travel to Boston from Providence with her brother to go to parties at the very club she was playing at that night. Fantastic.

If you saw them perform, which song did they say was the anthem of Summer '09? I can't remember, but I was inclined to agree! Although they were only opening for the supposed headliner Cut Copy, they had stole the show and left a crowd of over 600 begging for more.

Here comes the let down: I've said in a older post I was a little put off by this video of Cut Copy performing live on British TV. Lead singer Dan Whitford does this holier-preacher-than-thou thing while singing and it really dulls the performance.

Unfortunately, it was more or less the same thing. Opening up with 'Hearts on Fire' had the whole crowd wild. Good call. Then woosh, the transition into the next song was smooth.

Too Smooth.

Where the hell was the DJ? Who was playing those synths while they adjusted their guitar and bass? As fellow concertgoer Will Bond astutely observed, "Guess they have some CD playing in the background." Ouch. That's disheartening.

An elaboration of our discussion: Cut Copy's music is kind of layered, maybe too much for a 4 member band to do completely live. But damn. Matt & Kim's set was so intense and lively, and Matt was playing 2 synthesizers simultaneously AND rocking the fuck out. Now that's showmanship!

Multi-intrumentalist Tim Hoey stole the performance from a pouty Whitford, who just kinda stood there and shook his hands. Come on bro, entertain me! Jump around, break that synth your not using, do the Melbourne Shuffle, do SOMETHING goddamnit. Ugh, Verdict? Good music, boring as fuck performance.

Ok, i'm done being a bitch. I'm gonna go on iTunes and download GRAND. You should too! The tour continues, finishing off in Miami with the Ultra Music Festival.

Yea yeah, yeah yeah yeah yea yea, yea yeah, yeaaa yeah yeah yeah... Enjoy...
