One of the best of the "girl groups", THE CHANTELS launched their careers in 1956 on New York City's Broadway, where they were discovered by Richard Barrett, lead singer of The Valentines. All five of THE CHANTELS attended St.Anthony of Padua's Elementary School in Bronx,N.Y., and were members of St. Anthony's Church Choir. Their unique sound was rooted from the institution's liturgical music.

Barrett recorded THE CHANTELS --Arlene Smith, Lois Harris, Jackie Landry, Sonia Goring and Renee Minus White on George Goldner's End record label. " He's Gone"and" The Plea" started them off. Their next release,"Maybe" became a major national hit and made THE CHANTELS stars overnight. The three originals, Lois Harris Powell, Sonia Goring Wilson and Renee Minus White continue to sing in beautiful harmony with Noemi "Ami" Ortiz, their newest member, who belts out a strong lead on the group's top hits including "Maybe," "Look In My Eyes" and "I Love You So." Jackie Landry Jackson, another valued member of THE CHANTELS, died from breast cancer in 1997.

I don't much associate doo-wop with female groups, maybe due to my lack of exposure. But this sounds great.

Here's a 1963 hit, "Baby (I Love You)" by Bob B. Sox & the Blue Jeans that uses much of the same melody as "Maybe," not all that surprising since this type of ballad was usually built from a small number of formulaic chord progressions and melody fragments. Produced by Phil Spector, it features Darlene Love of the Blossoms as one of the two female singers, and probably Glenn Campbell, Billy Strange and Carol Kaye on guitars, Nino Tempo and/or Leon Russel [sic] on pianos, and Hal Blain on drums. The Ronnettes recorded it later the same year.
