SUTC - Back In The High Life

Warrens' cover of this Steve Winwood song reeks with a pathos the original did not possess. Leave it to Warren to have turned an upbeat pop song into a lament.

In an interview with Warren after the release of the " Life'll Kill You" CD, David Bowman comments - " He covers that old Steve Winwood hit "Back in the High Life Again" with the resigned detachment of someone sitting on death row in Texas wearing a "Bush for President" button. Zevon is an acquired taste, like sloe gin ... or capital punishment."

Can You Deal With It?

Andre "Mr. Rhythm" Williams is a R&B legend, and you may not even know it. He wrote "Shake A Tail Feather," and sang such uber-raunch cult classics as "Bacon Fat" (covered by the Cramps), "Greasy Chicken," and the epitome of songs about little girls, "Jail Bait." He worked at seminal labels such as Motown, Chess, and Fortune. He wrote songs for, or produced folks Ike Turner, Parliament/Funkadelic, Edwin Starr and Stevie Wonder.Traveling from Chicago to New Orleans on the mainline, R&B cult hero Andre "Mr. Rhythm" Williams has teamed with the Crescent City's hedonistic barroom punks The New Orleans Hellhounds. Like the unique city his backing boys call home, 'Dre has been dirty, down, broke and pushed to the edge of oblivion more than once, but both have managed to keep a glint in their eye and a strut in their step. The original Black Godfather wants us all to know on "Can You Deal With it?"(album release date - July 29th,2008)that he can still get around and get down with a Hellhound Sound that's as thick as an August night in the bayou. The guy is like music's version of Zelig; he's been everywhere, man. Yeah, baby.

Never Settle For Less - ThaMuseMeant

"I know a song can be a prayer. I know a song can be a sword." ThaMuseMent have hammered out a great collection of both. Dropping the drums and strapping on the strings, the band reunited after a three-year break to produce this set of wandering tunes that feels like an acoustic version of Bob Dylan's Desire. Much of it is sad and plaintive in the way gypsy music can be; each smile hard won, every mile felt beneath bad shoes, happiness, if it comes at all, "sweet as the wind blown through" the lips of your love. They find new meaning in well-worn phrases, further proving that Nathan Moore is a songwriter to be reckoned with. The band has had three permanent members since the beginning: Aimee Curl (acoustic bass and vocals), Nathan Moore (guitar and vocals), David Tiller (mandolin) and Enion Pelta-Tiller on violin, who joined in 2003. From the 2006 release "Never Settle For Less" here's the title track.

"Azwethinkweiz" from the 1997 EP release "Enjoy Incubus". My son, Dylan, suggested I listen to this because there is so little "metal" in my life.( He considers them "funk metal") Now, this track I can hang with, and "Hilikus" which I will post in comments. This was an kinder, gentler Incubus and I like it.

Warren Zevon - Preludes Part 1

Warren Zevon passed way from mesothelioma, a form of asbestos related lung cancer in 2003. A few months later, his son, Jordan, drove out to one of his dad's storage spaces in the San Fernando Valley to begin the sorting the process. He discovered over a 100 unreleased outtakes and demos in a piano-sized touring case.

Preludes features 16 of the best of these discovered recordings, including 6 unreleased tracks "Empty Hearted Town," "Going All The Way," "Steady Rain," "Stop Rainin Lord" "Studebaker" and "Rosarita Beach Café." All songs were recorded pre-1976. Other gems are previously unheard versions of "Werewolves of London" and "Accidentally Like A Martyr". The 2nd disc features an in-depth radio interview Warren did with Jody Denberg in 2000.

I'll be posting the interview, interspersed with the music....It's alot to take in at one sitting.... I added the track " I Was In The House When The House Burned Down" in comments.

Doo Wop Thursday - The not so eternal "Eternals"

The Eternals were a fine group that released just three records in their brief, but exciting career. They were from the Bronx, and included Charlie Girona on lead, first tenor Fred Hodge, Ernie Sierra as second tenor, baritone Arnie Torres and Alex Miranda with the distinctive bass voice. The red button track is a rare and never released recording "Do You Remember", and if you don't remember that, how about the YouTube of "Babalu's Wedding Day"?

I was cleaning out the basement and going thru boxes of STUFF (trying to make room for MORE boxes of STUFF, and I found some old CDs. To my delight there was an old Cris Williamson recording of her album " Changer and The Changed". I have always loved this song, and thought I might share it (even tho' it's not raining here, it may be where you are).... Wikipedia says:"Cris Williamson is a lesbian pioneer. Cris Williamson paved the way for many independent women and lesbian artists with her legendary album The Changer and the Changed released in 1975. The Changer and the Changed is still one of the best selling independent albums of all time."

Little Egypt (Ying Yang) - The Coasters

from the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame -

From 1956 to 1961, the Coasters released a string of classic singles that reflected the life of the American teenager with keen wit and hot, rocking harmonies. Invariably those songs were written, produced and arranged by the duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The union of a black vocal group with two Jewish songwriters was one of the most propitious in rock history. Leiber and Stoller’s witty, street-smart "playlets" were sung with sly, clowning humor by the Coasters and accompanied by the hot, honking "yakety sax" of King Curtis. The Coasters’ parlayed their R&B roots into rock and roll hits by delivering Leiber and Stoller’s serio-comic tunes in an uptempo doo-wop style. Beneath the humor the songs often made incisive points about American culture for those willing to dig a little deeper.

Leiber has described the Coasters’ style as "a white kid’s view of a black person’s conception of white society." In fact, their success showed how thin was the line between rhythm & blues and rock and roll in the Fifties. "Our songs…were R&B hits that white kids were attracted to," Leiber said in a 1992 interview. "And if people bought it, it became rock and roll."

The Coasters placed fourteen songs on the R&B charts, eight of which crossed over to the pop Top Forty. From 1957 to 1959 the Coasters unleashed a half dozen singles that dominated the charts in one of the most formidable runs of the rock and roll era: "Searchin’ (#1 R&B, #3 pop), "Young Blood" (#2 R&B, #8 pop), "Yakety Yak" (#1 R&B, #1 pop), "Charlie Brown" (#2 R&B, #2 pop), "Along Came Jones" (#14 R&B, #9 pop) and "Poison Ivy" (#1 R&B, #1 pop). Leiber and Stoller remarked that the Coasters "were fun to work with, they were fun to be with. They were a great bunch of clowns and they made our songs sing." It was such a potent combination of writing and performing talent that beyond the Coasters’ well-known hits lies a wealth of lesser known but equally fascinating treasures, such as "That Is Rock and Roll," "Shopping for Clothes," "Run Red Run," "What About Us" and "Idol with the Golden Head.".....and here I add my favorite lesser known treasure, "Little Egypt"

Have a Great Day!

On my last trip up to the Kings Peak Mountain Range in Humboldt County, Ca., a bear came into our camp on a daily basis. Mostly we found chewed up toothpaste, but one morning I had the misfortune to be up early and there he was! YIKES!....(he ambled away, back into the bushes from whence he came. Whew! And so, here is a cheery little bear song from Mother Hips.Hope this makes up for my previous post which was way too dark for a day like today!

Little Darlin' - Ai - Yi Yi Yi Yi !

Maurice williams wrote the song and recorded it with his group The Gladiolas in 1957. The Diamonds version became the bigger hit. The Diamonds were a clean-cut white vocal group that had sixteen hits between 1956 and 1961, ten which were covers of songs sung by black R&B artists.

Their biggest hit was a cover of the Gladiola's "Little Darlin'." The Gladiolas version came out in the first week in February, 1957. In less then two weeks the Diamonds version was out. Legend has it that prior to the recording session the group rehearsed the song all night in their hotel room, becoming so fed up that they exaggerated the bass and falsetto parts in an attempt to turn the song into a satire of itself. This is only partly true. Maurice Williams, the Gladiola's lead singer, invented all the vocal trills and hiccups...

The audio button is the Diamonds version, and (unbelievably) YouTube had a video recording of the original Gladiolas version, which I had not heard before.

From his One Trick Pony album, and probably my favorite track "Late In The Evening". It's not that it's so late up here in Grass Valley, just so smoky with all the wildfires in the surrounding area.

Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs

"Stay" written in 1958 by Williams, would become a #1 hit for the group in 1960. A classic by any standards. According to Dave Marsh ( Heart of Rock and Soul) "A combination of English language and Caribbean beat so powerfully off-center that it practically constitutes the first reggae record, an impression that's abetted by the rather primitive recording. "Stay" is sheer thrills: Williams bumping his yearning against the percussion (drums and wood blocks), the Zodiacs' chanted backing, and the slithering piano chords. The break was crucial in establishing that durable rock and roll convention and gospel bootleg: the falsetto."

Funky Friday... Ach du Leiber!

You may not readily associate late 70's techno band Kraftwerk with funk, but the direct influence on Afrika Bambaata's 1982 hit "Planet Rock" is a fact of Funk History. Kraftwerk are the reason music sounds like it does today. Pioneers, 20 years before their time, they invented much of what we recognise as the tools of electronic music. But quite apart from being inventors they were funky as hell and became the most sampled artsits ever..So, here's the audio for " TransEurope Express" the 1977 original track that inspired Afrikaa to invent "electro-funk", and the YouTube of the original "Planet Rock" video. May all your Fridays be Funky!

John Lennon,Delbert Mc Clinton and Bruce Channel. Delberts funky harmonica inspired John's own harp playing in "Love Me Do".

Delbert McClinton and Bruce Channel

Bruce Channel might have been a footnote in pop music history if he hadn't hooked up early in his career with another Ft. Worth musician who straddled the musical worlds of that city's legendary Jaxboro Highway. This stretch of bars alternated black and white clubs, where white boys played blues and black boys played country music and everybody kept an eye out for the law. Channel was a country singer, often heard on the LOUISIANA HAYRIDE radio show, but when he ran into harmonica player Delbert McClinton, he found someone as wild as he was.

Channel's big hit, "Hey, Baby," topped both the U.S. and British charts in 1962, and McClinton's harmonica on it inspired John Lennon's playing. Channel continued to record country in the years afterward, and McClinton has had a long career as a blues and roots singer.

It's Friday, It's Funky...and if you need some help getting a date this weekend, you may want to heed the advice herein. It's Ry Cooder ( I post him at the drop of a hat,I know)covering Chuck Berry's " Thirteen Question Method" from the CD "Get Rythym".I think Ry's version is far funkier than Chuck's.....

Peter Moon Band - Hanalei Moon

The music of Hawaii is some of the most enchanting I have ever heard. This song, "Hanalei Moon" is one of the most beautifully melodic examples of that enchantment.IMHO.

Wikipedia says:"Peter Moon (born August 25, 1944) is a ʻukulele and (slack-key) guitar master."

I say: "Sometimes you just need a little aloha."

Wiki says:"Underwear Goes Inside the Pants" is a song by Lazyboy (known as Lazy B in the UK), a musical project combining spoken word with hip-hop beats and other musical styles, with vocals on this track by stand-up comedian Greg Giraldo. Giraldo speaks in an observational humor style critical of American society.

Funk ,with an Attitude....The Brothers Johnson

Guitarist/vocalist George and bassist/vocalist Louis formed the band Johnson Three Plus One with older brother Tommy, and their cousin Alex Weir, while attending school in Los Angeles, California. When they became professionals, the band backed such touring R&B acts as Bobby Womack and the Supremes. George and Louis Johnson later joined Billy Preston's band.

Quincy Jones hired them to play on his LP Mellow Madness, and recorded four of their songs, including "Is It Love That We're Missing?" and "Just a Taste of Me".

After touring with various artists like Bobby Womack and Billy Preston , Quincy Jones hired them for a tour in Japan and produced their debut album Look Out For #1, released in March 1976 (#9 U.S.) Their Right On Time album was released in May 1977 and reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 200. Blam!! came out in August 1978 and reached number 7 on the Billboard 200.

Two of the duo's songs were featured on the soundtrack of the 1976 movie "Mother, Jugs & Speed." The instrumental track "Thunder Thumbs and Lightnin' Licks" refers to the brothers' nicknames and is a first rate piece of funk. "Get the Funk Out Ma Face" was cowritten with Quincy Jones and is another hard hitting funk romp.

One More (and I'm out the door)

You Sexy Thing" is a song recorded by the UK group, Hot Chocolate. It was written by Hot Chocolate lead singer Errol Brown, and produced by Mickie Most. It reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart in 1975.

The song was originally a 1975 B-side. Not convinced that the song was a hit, producer Most put it on the flip of the Hot Chocolate 45rpm single "Blue Night". The song was remixed at a later date by Most, who re-released it as an A-side some months later on his RAK label. The song was a massive hit.

At the time the song was written, there were some that thought the song should be banned or restricted, due to the relatively (for the time) frank exposition of the singer's praise and thanks for a woman who is willing to make love to him.

Del the Funky Homosapien - Dr. Bombay

Cousin of renowned gangster rapper Ice Cube, Del tha Funkee Homosapien (real name Teren Delvon Jones) was born

in Oakland, CA, on August 12, 1972, and got his start with Ice Cube's backing band, da Lench Mob. But Del's rap isn't as grim or violent as Ice Cube's is, in fact, he's been known to include something in his music that's far too uncommon in most rap: humor.Funky fun!

Across The Borderline

I really like Baudolino's postings of Hispanic music ... it is a genre I am woefully lacking in. And here we get spoon fed the best of it. Since I can't really add anything of the real organic Latin artists, here's a feeble post( but a terrific song) to the genre of the day..Across the Borderline from the 1987 release " Get Rhythm" was written by Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Dickinson. The last verse sung in Spanish is the voice of Harry Dean Stanton.

Good to the last drop Doo Wop

One of the best of the "girl groups",
THE CHANTELS launched their careers in 1956 on New York City's Broadway, where they were discovered by Richard Barrett, lead singer of The Valentines. All five of THE CHANTELS attended St.Anthony of Padua's Elementary School in Bronx,N.Y., and were members of St. Anthony's Church Choir. Their unique sound was rooted from the institution's liturgical music.

Barrett recorded THE CHANTELS --Arlene Smith, Lois Harris, Jackie Landry, Sonia Goring and Renee Minus White on George Goldner's End record label. " He's Gone"and" The Plea" started them off. Their next release,"Maybe" became a major national hit and made THE CHANTELS stars overnight. The three originals, Lois Harris Powell, Sonia Goring Wilson and Renee Minus White continue to sing in beautiful harmony with Noemi "Ami" Ortiz, their newest member, who belts out a strong lead on the group's top hits including "Maybe," "Look In My Eyes" and "I Love You So." Jackie Landry Jackson, another valued member of THE CHANTELS, died from breast cancer in 1997.

Sunday Under Covers - All Shook Up

"All Shook Up" is one of the many hit songs of Elvis Presley. It reached the top of all three U.S. charts (pop, country and R&B), staying there for eight weeks in 1957, from April 13 through May 27. In the U.S., it is regarded as the top song of 1957. Otis Blackwell composed this song, with compositional additions by Elvis himself, who is also credited as lyricist. It was ranked #352 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Here is Ry Cooder with his version.I never really liked this song much til I heard this track.

I Just Dropped In...

(To See What Condition My Condition Was In) is a song written by Mickey Newbury. Said to reflect the LSD experience, Newbury wrote it as a warning against the danger of using LSD. First recorded in 1967 by Jerry Lee Lewis, who rejected it, it was a hit for The First Edition (with Kenny Rogers on lead vocals) in 1968.
According to Rogers, "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" was Jimi Hendrix's favorite song.
I chose not to post the more familiar Kenny Rodgers version, but one by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

Runs In The Family - The Roches

With one of the most distinctive and diverse vocal sounds in the modern musical spectrum, the Roche sisters -- Maggie, Suzzy and Terre -- weave barbershop harmonies, traditional Irish melodies, doo-wop, bee bop and a dozen other styles into a sound wholly their own on their acclaimed 1979 release, The Roches. Featuring ten original songs written by the trio singly or in various combinations, The Roches spotlights the wry humor, subtle arrangements and consummate musical craftsmanship that has brought the group both critical and popular acclaim.

The Roches will be appearing with Paul Simon at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, April 23rd thru the 27th...The concert includes Gillian Welch also...I know she's got some fans on Mog.

Richie Havens - Freedom

Even if you weren't at Woodstock, this is one of those performances that's hard to beat.Richie’s Woodstock appearance proved to be a major turning point in his career. As the festival’s first performer, he held the crowd spellbound for nearly three hours, called back for encore after encore. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless Child" that became "Freedom", a song now considered to be the anthem of a generation. Sometimes you have to go back and listen to this stuff, just so you don't forget how GOOD it was.(is).

My pick for this Sunday Under Cover is John Hiatt covering the Joey Ramone favorite "I Wanna Be Sedated". For some oddball reason, I like it...(is that a mandolin in the background?)Yeah!

Buchanan and Goodman - Sampling 1956 Style.

Imagine a single that sampled U2, Jay-Z, Bruce Springsteen, Nirvana and a bunch of others — without permission — and then hit #3 on the Billboard charts, selling more than a million copies. That's right, you're imagining the mother of all lawsuits. You're also imagining something that pretty much already happened — in 1956.

That was when 21-year-old Dickie Goodman, along with partner Bill Buchanan, recorded "The Flying Saucer," parts 1 and 2, on a reel-to-reel tape recorder, parodying Orson Welles' infamous War of the Worlds broadcast with a frenetic, freewheeling skit about an alien invasion, brazenly incorporating snippets of hits by Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Carl Perkins, Bill Haley and about two dozen other musical giants.
No one had ever done this before.

Some 17 record labels sued Buchanan and Goodman for poaching their music, but being the wise-ass punks they were, the duo responded with yet another of what they called a "break-in record": "Buchanan and Goodman on Trial," which bit Nat King Cole, Little Richard, Elvis, the Dragnet theme and a bunch of Martians. They got slapped with an injunction, but New York State Supreme Court Judge Henry Clay Greenberg deemed the work a parody and therefore subject to fair use laws; Buchanan and Goodman, the judge opined, "had created a new work."

Stranded In The Jungle - The Cadets

One of the great novelty records of the '50s, the Cadets' "Stranded in the Jungle" beats the Jayhawks' comparatively bland original by sheer force of its presentation. Like a cross between the Coasters' brilliant story songs and Stan Freberg's imaginative musical parodies, "Stranded in the Jungle" has a multi-part structure that manages to tweak both '50s jungle exotica (in the sections that take place in a cartoonish Africa filled with headhunting savages) and, even better, the more insipid side of early rock and roll (in the sections that feature the suitors of Our Hero's Penelope-like lady, which are set to a parody of '50s pop conventions almost as pointed as Freberg's deconstruction of "The Great Pretender"). The song also features some of the funniest lines of the era, two of which became cultural touchstones for a time: "Meanwhile, back in the jungle" and "Great googly-moogly!" (Trivia answer: the latter line was uttered -- yelped, really -- by Prentice Moreland, who had recently replaced founding member Austin Taylor. The bass lead vocal, of course, is by Dub Jones, and the deliberately weedy tenor lead on the rock and roll sections is Willie Davis.) One of the earliest clues that rock and roll had a sense of humor about itself, "Stranded in the Jungle" remains one of the classic novelty R&B singles.(It was also the unofficial theme song for a wholly ficticious newspaper "the Jungle Drum" in Honaunau Hawaii. Filled with lies, gossip, rumor and innuendo, our motto was.. "Nothing ruins a good story like a damned eye witness.")

Baudolino's comment on runobodyii's post sent me dashing to find some of this stuff. Mento is a little like calypso, and The Jolly Boys played a lot of it.This is the original line up: Moses Deans - banjo and guitar, and the group's founder
David Martin (a.k.a. Sonny) - maracas
Brown (a nickname) - guitar
Johnny - rumba box (his last name could not be recalled).

The song, titled "They All Ask'd For You," was recorded by the original Meters during the '70s and was based on an ancient New Orleans nursery rhyme, as interpreted by drummer "Zigaboo" Modeliste. It can currently be found on Funkify Your Life: the Meters Anthology (Rhino), one of OffBeat's "100 Essential Louisiana CDs.This track I took from my copy of " The Very Best of the Meters", and was written by Arthur "Red" Neville and George Porter, Jr.

I thought this was a trippy track by Eartha Kitt from the " Eartha Kitt In Person At The Plaza"LP, circa 1965. "C'mon a my House" was written in 1939 by Ross Bagdasarian (who would later create Alvin and the Chipmunks under the stage name, David Seville) and his cousin, famous author, William Saroyan. It didn't become a hit until 1951 when it was recorded by Rosemary Clooney. It sounds like (mangled) Japanese she's scatting on this, but I'm not sure. Domo Arigato.

Clifford "Brownie" Brown

Clifford "Brownie" Brown had the unwavered tone and bop-percolation of greatness. Cutoff by Jazz's Angular Age, the unwary Brown welded a plinth of immortal jazz trumpet into the taunts of his caricaturing mute.

Born October 30, 1930 in Wilmington Delaware, Clifford "Brownie" Brown got his start at 15 when his father gave him a trumpet. The scoundrel's cool band director, Harry No's affinity for trumpet antics did not go unrecognized. His broodiness and his instrument provided initial engagements which helped contour his annealing swirls. These figured Clifford's jazz into an unmapped--save for theory--styling, helped by dope and bopping harmony, and learned under Robert Lowery's wig in Phillie, and from cats like Fats Navarro, who soon became his Mentor, Fomentor, and Godhead.

(During this time he also performed with the likes of Tinker, Killer, Tiller and Muff Spikes, not to mention his friendship with Girl, a paranoid genius/pianist, who would provide borderline psychotic encouragement from Glass Enclosures.

In 1949, hindered by his aural studies, his amusement almost became short-lived when he had a mildly fatal automobile accident. This hospitalized Brown from June 1950 until May of 1951.

Miraculously, just hours before his death, Brownie appeared at a Soupy Sales variety show that was recorded (but never seen--until now!), where he played some of the finest music of his short life.

This bookend's his career with two short, hip, pent-up songs, which after 40 years, leave a taste for more.

I present to you the unloosing footage of Brownie and his trumpet.

In 1969, Elton John tried to commit suicide after having relationship problems with a woman he was engaged to. Bernie Taupin and Long John Baldry, who was openly gay, found him, and Baldry talked him out of marrying the woman, helping to make John more comfortable with his sexuality. The hit song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was written about the experience.
