SUTC - Back In The High Life

Posted about 1 year ago

Warrens' cover of this Steve Winwood song reeks with a pathos the original did not possess. Leave it to Warren to have turned an upbeat pop song into a lament.

In an interview with Warren after the release of the " Life'll Kill You" CD, David Bowman comments - " He covers that old Steve Winwood hit "Back in the High Life Again" with the resigned detachment of someone sitting on death row in Texas wearing a "Bush for President" button. Zevon is an acquired taste, like sloe gin ... or capital punishment."

I've always liked Stevie Winwood's song but this version is so much better. Thanks for enriching my Sunday's musical journey.

Thank you Madeline for adding the clip of an interview. Ry Cooder said recently that if you kept on doing something for long enough, you should get better at it. Warren Zevon got plenty damn' better at it, but I wish he had been given more time... particularly because meso is such a vile painful disease.

Heartbreaking to hear Warren. Even when the song is witty, there's a poignance to it. Bottom line: Great cover for him, beautifully done.
