Runs In The Family - The Roches

Posted about 1 year ago
With one of the most distinctive and diverse vocal sounds in the modern musical spectrum, the Roche sisters -- Maggie, Suzzy and Terre -- weave barbershop harmonies, traditional Irish melodies, doo-wop, bee bop and a dozen other styles into a sound wholly their own on their acclaimed 1979 release, The Roches. Featuring ten original songs written by the trio singly or in various combinations, The Roches spotlights the wry humor, subtle arrangements and consummate musical craftsmanship that has brought the group both critical and popular acclaim. The Roches will be appearing with Paul Simon at The Brooklyn Academy of Music, April 23rd thru the 27th...The concert includes Gillian Welch also...I know she's got some fans on Mog.

  1. deedee says Many years ago, someone gave me an EP (yes, an EP) of theirs, and I played "The Married Men" over and over. Oh, no reason. ... Suzzy has also acted some. She turned up in Crossing Delancey very effectively, and there are a few Roches songs on the soundtrack, including a very lovely Come Softly to Me.

  2. dermahrk says I've heard a couple of tracks before by the group or its individual members, but nothing really struck my fancy. This DID! Since it's from an eponymous LP, was it their first?

  3. Madeline Burke says Yes, this is from the first Roches album.."The Roches". My sisters and I were, at one time, long ago, official Roches wanna be's.

  5. Madeline Burke says The picture is not the original album cover, but a later one "Move".

  6. RobP says They were on Saturday Night Live around the time of the first album I think, back when SNL played cool bands before they broke. I definitely saw them on tv around then, and they have a lot on Youtube, worth perusing. There's even a vid of Pretty and High, my favorite from this album, but I totally understand playing The Married Men over and over, or pretty much anything else from this one.

  7. runobodyii says I can't understand playing anything by The Roches once. The Women''s Music shows on community radio in SLC used to drive me nuts with their Roches obsession. They can even render a train song unpalatable for me. Now if there were a tribute album (with unannoying acts), at least I could hear the songs.

  8. fairportfan says First album cover art: Actually, the SNL shot (or was it Carson i'm thinking of?) was for their fourth album - the one least liked by Roches fans - *Another World*. It's the least-liked because the label got tired of beautiful quirky albums that sold about three hundred and fifty-two copies and decided that the problem was that here were these gurrrls doing their own stuff and hired arrangers and a ehole band of male session persons and basically treated the Roches as if they were the Monkees. The only really good tracks on that album are Come Softly to Me (their harmonies are deadly) and Face Down at Folk City, which celebrates the time that Maggie was a bar maid and Terre was a waitress there. As i recall, it was *The Roches*, *Keep on Doing* and *Nurds* first - although i might have the second and third backward. Oddly enough, because i know *Bill Davis* from pychobilly/cowpunk band *Dash Rip Rock*, i'm only one handshake away from the Roches - Bill's sister was Maggie and Terre's roommate when they were in school down in Louisiana (Hammond Song). At Music Midtown 3 in Atlanta, i had to carry the word to them that DRR had played the day before, so they weren't gonna get to hang with Bill for a while like the hoped. Suzzy was married to *Loudon Wainwright* for a while; they have a daughter. Appearing with *Paul Simon* makes sense, since Maggie and Terre did backing vocals on *Rhymin' Simon*...

  10. fairportfan says And i forgot to mention that they provided the voices for the "Singing Roach Sisters" in a *Tiny Toons* segment. The best gag in the whokle segment is when Maggie loses her temper and starts reading Hampton the riot act. Terre and Suzzy stare blankly at each other and go "Maggie?" in completely astonished tone of voice. It's one of those jokes that, if you don't get it, no amount of explaining will make it funny for you, except in a sort of milsly whimsical way. If you *do* get it, it's likely to break you up. (Kind of like a gag they wouldn't let Peter David use in a *Babylon 5* script - it revolved around Garibaldi, a pop culture addict with a Daffy Duck poster over his bed inhis quarters, trying to convince Londo to do something. Finally Londo sighs in vexation, and says, "Oh, very well - 'moose and squirrel'. There, are you satisfied?")
