John Covers Joey

Posted almost 2 years ago
My pick for this Sunday Under Cover is John Hiatt covering the Joey Ramone favorite "I Wanna Be Sedated". For some oddball reason, I like it...(is that a mandolin in the background?)Yeah!

  1. fairportfan says I find it difficult to believe that he manages to fluff the lines twice in the first half of the song, as simplistic as they are... I've always loved people doing cross-genre versions of stuff; from *Dash Rip Rock*'s live album, Boiled Alive (the one with the cover art that almost got them sued by the McIlhenny corporation...):

  2. fairportfan says ..or perhaps to take a trad song, make it topical, as *Billy Bragg* does here: (My first wife's grandfather was a minign engineer in "Bloody Harlan" County; she was well aware of the original of this song...)

  3. fairportfan says ...or just to goof around, as *Big Daddy* do here: (BTW - according to the liner notes, this was apparently played on one of *Duane Eddie*'s old guitars...)

  4. deadmandeadman says When I read this (John Hiatt covering the Ramones), I said to myself "no friggin' way" (than I told myself to watch my friggin' language)("yeah? says who?" I shot back at myself)(it got ugly after that, I'm not speaking to myself now until I apologize). But the music......I'd never heard that before Madeline, and I'm glad I have. Sadly, though I have great admiration for Mr Hiatt, my knowledge of his work is limited and underfed.

  8. Madeline Burke says Here's the skinny...April 4, 1996 recorded live at the Record Plant in Sausalito Ca. with the Nashville Queens- David Immergluck - mandolin, Davey Faragher - acoustic Bass, Micheal Urbano - Drums and Percussion.. I recieved this recording from a friend and I am not 100% sure if it is from the Record Plant, oo the next days' concert in San Francisco.

  10. dermahrk says I own most of Hiatt's output, so it was a real pleasure to hear this unreleased number, and Hiatt really rips it up. With that pace, and the mandolin, I kept thinking: Earl Scruggs should be playing his lightning-fast banjo to this song! I foresee a bluegrass classic!
