Someone Saved My Life Tonight

Posted almost 4 years ago
In 1969, Elton John tried to commit suicide after having relationship problems with a woman he was engaged to. Bernie Taupin and Long John Baldry, who was openly gay, found him, and Baldry talked him out of marrying the woman, helping to make John more comfortable with his sexuality. The hit song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was written about the experience.

  1. fairportfan says The "John" part of Elton's name is in tribute to Long John; bothe Elton and Rod Stewart started out in Long John's bands. In 1970/71, Elton and Rod each produced an album-worth of tracks for Long John, which wound up being released as two LPs (*Everything Stops for Tea* and [i think] *It Ain't Easy*) with one side of each LP being tracks produced by Elton and one side being tracks produced by Rod. Elton played some piano and Rod contributed vocals to one track: ~4XiKB821RN4.mp3~ Consider the irony inherent in the fact that it's 2008, and this album was released thirty-seven years ago in 1971 as Long John talks about how *long* it's been since he and Rod last sang together - way back in 1965, six years earlier...

  7. dermahrk says Well, it didn't work, as Elton at a later date *did* marry a woman, with predictable results.
