Joe Perry Undergoes Successful Knee Replacement Surgery

Aerosmith axeman Joe Perry has undergone successful knee replacement surgery. The surgery was performed last Tuesday, March 18th after being put off for two years so Perry could complete live commitments.

Perry was put into ICU but doctors have eased his pain and transformed him to a private room. Perry will stay there through the end of the week then head home where he will recover until the end of the year.

Funny, but I don't remember him having an affinity for playing guitar while sliding on his knees.

San Francisco...I am starting to get jealous. The line-up for this summer's inaugural Outside Lands Festival is shaping up to be one of the hottest. Joining headliners Radiohead, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Jack Johnson will be Beck, Wilco (whose tune "Walken" is currently spinning on my iTunes) and Widespread Panic. The three-day festival will take place at San Francisco's historic Golden Gate Park August 22nd to 24th, 2008.

Rodrigo y Gabriela, Cold War Kids, Manu Chao, Café Tacvba, Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings, Steel Pulse, Nellie McKay will also join a bill of local acts that includes Primus, Two Gallants, The Coup, The Mother Hips, Goapele, ALO, Matt Nathanson and Sean Hayes.

Tickets will go on sale Sunday, March 30, 2008, at 10am PST through www.SFOutsidelands.com.

Britney Spears On CBS' "How I Met Your Mother"

Britney is back. The recovering pop-star made a positive return to television last night on an episode of the CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. She does a great job of playing a ditzy doctor's receptionist. The show, which also stars Doogie Howser, M.D. and the "at band camp" girl, is actually pretty funny.

Cachao, Creator Of Mambo, Dies At 89

Cuban bass player Israel Lopez "Cachao," known as one of the creators of the mambo has died due to kidney failure. He was 89.

In 1930s Cuba, Lopez with the help of his brother Orestes composed the piece "Danzon Mambo," which heralded the mambo revolution, later carried out by Damaso Perez Prado.

Cachao would then live his life in obscurity, until being rediscovered by actor Andy Garcia. Garcia produced Cachao's Master Sessions, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He also brought Cachao to the silver screen in the documentary Cachao: Como Su Ritmo No Hay Otro.

Later in his life, Cachao moved to the U.S. where he recorded Emilio Estefan's Crescent Moon Records, appearing on on Gloria Estefan's album 90 Millas. He had more recently been signed on by label/management Eventus.

Introducing The Kurt Cobain Converse

How else do we honor Kurt Cobain, but by marketing the shoe he killed himself in with his name on it. Yes, Converse will release a new limited edition series of shoes decorated with the late Nirvana frontman's drawings and writing from his 2002 book Journals. The kicks are out this May.

The Kurt Cobain Converse have gotten the full OK and approval of his widow, Courtney Love, unlike last year's Dr. Martens campaign which tried to use Kurt Cobain's image to hype up their shoe, without the estate's approval.

Here are some pictures

R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and Peter Buck Poke Fun At Band's Sexuality

Today comes the long awaited confirmation that R.E.M's Peter Buck and Michael Mills are straight. A play on the obsession media has with the band's frontman Michael Stipe's sexual orientation was announced today via press release and read:

"R.E.M.'s Mike Mills and Peter Buck announced today that they are both, after years of awkward speculation, heterosexual, or "straight." Singer Michael Stipe declared his relief, and acknowledged that this turn of events was welcomed news, congratulating their courage and candidness.

Stipe, Out Magazine [1995] and BUTT Magazine cover star, after 14 years of speaking publically about his own private life, was in a strong position to offer his support. Said Mike Mills, "It was time to step out of the fog of uncertainty and into the light of light."

Madonna's "Hard Candy" Album Cover

Madonna's new album Hard Candy doesn't come out for another five weeks, but its already Number Two on Amazon.com, right behind everyone's favorite - Celtic Thunder's (who?) self-titled album.

Pete Wentz Contemplated Suicide, Now Helping Fight It

Suicide is the dumbest shit anyone can do, next to killing a friend in the passenger seat while driving under the influence. On a personal note, the effects and turmoil self-flicted death causes on friends and family is indescribable, if anything unbearable.

Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz is sorta a dumbass. He toyed with the idea of killing himself, around the time he was launching his music career. (Could it have been all the mean eyeliner remarks?)

In the Jed Foundation's Half Of Us campaign, helping cut student suicide rates, Wentz describes his suicide method (overdosing on prescription pills), but admits he was lucky and got help in time. And if he hadn't, he'd never become the king of emo with a buttload of cash, dating one of the Simpson sisters. Moral of the story: don't kill yourself. we give Wentz major props on not committing the act and trying to help others.

Wentz's words:

"I got in my car. I remember I was listening to Jeff Buckley doing Leonard Cohen's (song) Hallelujah and sat there and took a bunch of (prescription drug) Adavan in a Best Buy (store) parking lot. And I called up my manager because I was, at that point, completely out of my head with Adavan. And I was talking to him and I was slurring my words, so he called my mom and my mom called me and she came and got me and we went to the hospital. I came home and we realised that we needed to do more than just keep (my) head above water. It's not really about keeping your head above water, it's about feeling all right and feeling safe in your own skin. It's not about keeping your head above water and barely keep going."

For more on suicide prevention head here.

I stopped playing with my Barbies back before middle school, but up-and-coming 23-year-old Katy Perry, is still holding onto her Barbie and Ken doll, both who make a cameo in her video for "Ur So Gay."

This is one for the folks at TRL. Perry is heading out on Warped Tour this summer, beginning June 20th in Pomona, CA. Watch out Ashlee Simpson....

New Video: Rivers Cuomo Scores In "Lover In The Snow"

Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo has recently released an official video for "Lover in the Snow" from Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo. The video is a little personal glimpse into Cuomo’s love for the game of soccer. Made YouTube guerilla style, the video traces his setbacks in life with the sport, culminating with a recent goal he made at a charity soccer match hosted by US soccer star Mia Hamm last January. It had so much of an effect on Cuomo he not only made a music video about it, but he also changed his MySpace profile name from Rivers to Rivaldinho, a play on Brazilian soccer sensation Ronaldinho (Ronaldo de Assís Moreira).

Lover In The Snow

The Slip And A Pal Collaborate On Surprise Me Mr. Davis

I can't figure out why no one has done this before. In a pretty novel approach to the press please/newsletter Mass. brats the Slip (you might remember them from their 2006 album Eisenhower, that skewed them from the jam to indie scene) have announced a set of side project shows. The run is with their pal Nathan Moore (of ThaMuseMeant), and thoghter with the Slip they make up the foursome Surprise Me Mr. Davis.

This isn't the first time the group has played together. After being trapped in doors, thanks to a New England blizzard back in 2002, the group jammed and went on to release 2004's self-titled effort and 2005's Only In Montreal EP via Frogville Records. Below is that press release I was talking about and the show dates, kicking off at Burlington, VT's the Higher Ground on April 17th. More shows may be announced int he future. Cut, paste and reply your Madlib to mrdavismadlib@gmail.com for a chance to win two tickets to the show of your choice.

Surprise Me Mr. Davis will hit the (noun) in April for a/an (adj) week of shows. For the unacquainted , Surprise Me Mr Davis is the (noun) between Nathan Moore and The Slip, a fruitfull project that began in 2002 when a/an (noun) storm left the four(noun plural)
with nothing but a home recording studio and a bunch of (noun plural). The band has been (verb) for the last year, enjoying sporadic shows and long distance collaborations. "(exclamation) " said Nathan, "We just want to (verb) together in one place for more than a night, toast our (type of liquid) and make some (noun plural) together”. So there you have it. If you want to hear some great (musical instrument) and dance the (type of dance), go see Surprise Me Mr. Davis this April. You won't be (negative emotion)!

SHOW DATES

April 17th: The Higher Ground, Burlington VT 9pm
April 18th: Club Helsinki, Great Barrington MA 9pm
April 19th: The Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton MA 10pm
April 20th: Sullivan Hall, Manhattan NY 9pm
April 22nd: Narrows Center for The Arts, Fall River MA 8pm

If you can't wait till June 10th to hear My Morning Jacket's new album Evil Urges, then you are in for a treat.
CSS' "Music Is My Hot Hot Sex" Most Watched YouTube Video?

104,086,072. That's how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop. We kid! It's actually the new world record for most hits on YouTube, now held by CSS' "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex." Yes, the Brazilian hotties and one guy have surpassed the previous record (78,145,221) set by "Evolution of Dance." Some think there might be a glitch, or maybe CSS have some die hard fans that have been pushing the play button non-stop. The songs was also in an Apple commercial, that might have helped.

Gnarls Barkely Edit "Run" Music Video

After failing the Harding Test - a test that makes sure TV images don't trigger epileptic seizures (let us not forget the Pokemon seizure incident of 1997)- the Gnarls Barkley's "Run" video has been re-edited for play in the UK. The original video's strobe effects were changed.

"It seemed justifiable to hesitate a bit to make sure it didn't result in something severe," Cee-Lo, one-half of the group, told Billboard.com. "We just focused on any compromise we could come to. We didn't get too agitated -- we just concentrated our focus on how we could resolve the problem."

The band's sophomore album The Odd Couple comes out April 8th and will be followed by a guest appearance on Saturday Night Live on April 12th.

Janet Jackson Rules At Number One Again

Janet Jackson's Discipline debuted at Number One this week after selling 181,000 copies, ending Jack Johnson's reign on the Billboard Top 200. Johnson's Sleep Through The Static falls to Number Three behind the first album 4th World War from Erykah Badu's double-disc set New Amerykah. At Number Four is rapper Webbie's Savage Life 2 which sold 72,000 copies.

Erykah Badu, "Honey"

Alicia Keys' As I Am slips three spots this week to Number Five after selling 57,000 units. Miley Cyrus' Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus climbs back onto the chart from 14-6 this week after selling 54,000 albums.

Also creeping up the chart this week, with help from their Oscar win for Best Original Song, is the Frames' Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, with their soundtrack for Once. The album sold 47,000 copies in the last week bringing it up from 31-7.

The soundtrack to Juno fell two spots this week to Number Eight, selling 42,000 copies. Singer Sara Bareilles' album Little Voice drops to Number Nine this week (37,000 copies). Amy Winehouse's Back to Black rounds out the Top Ten after slipping from last week's Number Three spot (37,000 copies).

Phish Being Honored With Lifetime Achievement Jammy

Improvisational jamband Phish have been making headlines lately. Just yesterday, I posted a story about the band's drummer Jon Fishman playing a couple of shows with Yonder Mountain String Band.

Today news hits that the band, who broke up in 2004, will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2008 Jammy Awards. Don't count on a reunion though. There's no word on weather any of the band members - Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon and Page McConnell - will show up. Past Jammys for Life Achievement have gone to B.B. King, The Meters, The Grateful Dead, Buddy Guy, Steve Winwood and Frank Zappa.

The awards show is set to take place at the Theater at Madison Square Garden on May 7th, 2008. Nominees, performers and presenters will be announced in the near future.

Keith Richards The New Face Of Louis Vuitton

Kanye West I'd get. Pharrell was a good choice, but Keith droopy-face-Richards as the new face of luxury brand Louis Vuitton...um, I'm a little confused.

Artistic Director for the brand Marc Jacobs (aka my favorite NY-based designer) has enlisted the Rolling Stones axeman as the new face of Louis Vuitton, which in the past years has been modeled by Scarlett Johansson and Uma Thurman - both blond and well-busted. Neither of which Richards is.

Breaking the mold of the stuffy line, known best for its monogram handbags, the 64-year-old Richards was photographed by esteemed photog Annie Leibowitz "cradling his guitar on a hotel-room bed, the lights part obscured by skull-print black drapes," according to the AP. The tag line for the ad campaign? "Some journeys cannot be put into words. New York. 3 am. Blues in C." The ads hit magazines next month.

Richards is said to be donating his fee for the job to the Climate Project, started by Nobel-winning former US vice-president Al Gore and backed by French luxury fashion house.

Now, Radiohead & Johnson will headline San Fransisco's Outside Lands festival August 22nd-24th at the city's Golden Gate Park. Joining them as another headliner for the event will be Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Black Francis Releasing New Mini-LP, Check Out New "I Sent Away" Video

The ever prolific Black Francis (a.k.a. Frank Black of the Pixies) is releasing his latest recording session -
written, recorded and mixed in six days. The album, a follow-up to Bluefinger is called Svn Fngrs, (missing some E's there) and is due on March 4th, 2008 via Cooking Vinyl. The seven songs on the mini-LP clock in at about 20 minutes and will be available, according to Francis/Black, at "whatever price your Google research turns up."

"If you want it for free," he adds, "you can usually find some tracks for free download on my MySpace page or on my own blackfrancis.net."

The idea for the mini-album came after management asked Francis for an electronic B-side for his last album Bluefinger. Alas, the reoccurring "finger" title theme. However the other topics of conversation on the album also include "NASTY sex, NASTIER death, and
beautifully strange birth."

Black Francis is responsible for the guitar, vocals and harmonica on the album while the album's producer Jason Carter helps with drum duties, and Violet Clark contributes bass.

Here's a video for the track off the album, "I Sent Away"

Svn Fngrs Tracklisting:

2. Garbage Heap
3. Half Man
4. I Sent Away
5. Seven Fingers
6. The Tale of Lonesome Fetter

Update: Gene Simmons Sex Tape

Turns out that Gene Simmons had no idea that he was being taped in the crude and adulterous act that is his sex tape.

Earlier this week a Web site went up that charged people to view the Gene sex-scapade with a energy drink spokesmodel. Now Simmons' lawyer, Barry E. Mallen, is talking. He says that the tapes are indeed authentic but were taped without the Kiss bassist's knowledge or consent by Traci Anna Koval. Koval also then sold the copyrights of the tape to Allied Industry Tours, Ltd.

Now Simmons and his legal team are demanding a cease and desist on the streaming of the film at http://www.genessecret.com/. Simmons also wants all the profits from the Web site, which has been charging per view.

Turns out that since it uses Gene Simmons name the whole fiasco violates California's right of publicity statue.

Paramore Taking A Break, But Not Breaking Up

In case you haven't heard it yet, Paramore, who were recently nominated for a Best New Artist Grammy, have canceled their European tour. Just yesterday, the band released a message blaming the cancellation on internal issues which led fans to speculate they were breaking up.

Lead singer Hayley Williams has since added another post on the band's MySpace page, explaining that the band are working through their problems and will not be breaking up any time soon.

"the music our collisions make!

hello everyone…

since we posted the last entry, we’ve gotten tons of phone calls and people posting things on websites saying that we are breaking up. i just want to make it clear, though, that by posting two nights ago we weren’t saying the band was over. we posted because we are going through hard times and we felt that because we have a really good support system in you guys, our fans, it would be better for us to just be honest about what’s going on - even though, it was a pretty vague explanation. man, some of the rumors that i’ve heard going around are insane! it’s weird how out of hand things can get even when you just try to tell a simple truth. (for the record, my eggo is not preggo). anyway, we just need to take time to make this band the best it can be… and we are doing that now.

thank you for all the love and the encouragement you guys have shown. and WE WILL! be seeing you guys on the 27th of March in Orlando, FL"

The original message that freaked fans out:

"Hey guys,

As most of you already know, we have cancelled the rest of our UK/Europe RIOT Tour. First of all, we want to say we are so sorry for letting all of you down. We feel terrible about it and really didn’t expect for this to happen. It probably doesn’t sound like much but we just hate that we won’t get to play this show for those of you who had hoped to see it.

There are a lot of internal issues that have been going on in this band for quite a while now. A lot of it started right around the time we were gearing up for the RIOT Tour in the US. We were able to fight through all of it for this long but unfortunately we weren’t able to keep it together long enough to make it through ’til the end of this tour. We really feel that taking this time is going to give us a chance to get away and work out our personal issues at home and on our own terms. We just aren’t willing to risk the life of our band over one tour. That probably sounds terrible right now, to say that finishing a week of shows wasn’t worth it… but if we can use this next month wisely then we will be a lot healthier for the tours ahead. We hope that - even though it might be hard to understand - that you guys can support us at this time.

Maybe one day we will tell the whole story but for now, just know that all five of us are going to work so hard to get it right. You deserve that and we deserve to make this last as long as possible - and to enjoy every second of it. We love you guys so much. If you could pray for us or just keep us in your thoughts it would be really helpful. You guys have gotten us so far and been the best motivators since day one. We are so sorry for the trouble we caused you guys who bought tickets, fan club members and to all the promoters and venues that we won’t be there to put on a show for. We are extremely sorry to New Found Glory and all their fans who wanted to put on and see a show and who we’ve let down. And lastly, to Lost Alone.

We will keep you guys updated.

Love,
Hayley, Jeremy, Josh, Zac and Taylor"

Jack Johnson Still #1, Grammy Winners Make Comeback On Album Chart

Despite a sales week dominated by Grammy performances, Jack Johnson's Sleep Through The Static remains at Number One after selling 180,000 copies its second week out.

Jack Johnson - "If I Had Eyes"

Behind Johnson is the surprising comeback of recent five-time Grammy winner Amy Winehouse. Her album Back to Black shot up 22 spots to land at Number Two after selling 115,000 copies. Alicia Keys, who also performed at the Grammys, remains at Number Three for another week with her latest As I Am (109,000 copies).

The 2008 Grammy Nominees compilation sold 72,000 (40% more than last week) to move up one spot to Number Four, proving that the Grammy do indeed have an impact on chart performance. The Foo Fighters' had their album Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace climb from 65 to 22 after selling 33,000 copies following their Grammy performance. Kanye West's Graduation also notched up from 64 to 40 after selling 23,000 album.

But the Grammys didn't just help Winehouse, the Foos and west leap, they also shot Grammy Album of the Year winner Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters 154 spots north. Hankcock's Joni Mitchell covers album was 159 on the Top 200, just last week. This week after selling 54,000 copies it lands at Number Five.

At Number Six is the soundtrack to the comedy Juno which sold 53,000 copies. Taylor Swift, who lost the Best New Artist Grammy to Winehouse still moved up three spaces to Number Seven after selling 52,000 copies. Sheryl Crow's Detours took a fall this week descending from 2-8, but also selling 52,000 copies.

Sheryl Crow - Shine Over Babylon

Mary J. Blige's Growing Pains moved down one spot to Number Nine this week after only selling 49,000 albums. The soundtrack to the dance-themed movie Step Up 2 rounds out the Top Ten this week after selling 45,000 copies.

New Order/Stone Roses/Smiths Supergroup Gets New Lead Singer, Billy Corgan Guesting On Vocals

Freebass, the bassist-friendly group formed by New Order bassist Peter Hook and The Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Mani with The Smiths’ bassist Andy Rourke has finally added a singer.
Gary Briggs, formerly of Cornish-by-Manchester band Haven will lend his chops to the supergroup trio.

Freebass formed in 2004 when both Hook's and Mani's, according to Hook, were "stalled." However, both Hook's New Order went back to the studio to record 2005's Waiting for the Sirens' Call, while Primal Scream went on tour to promote their 2006 release Riot City Blues.

“We have had trouble getting it together," Hook told the BBC, "and I have had a lot of trouble finding a vocalist and we now have another one. This is about our 15th one.”

Other guest vocalist working on the album include Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, Stone Roses' Ian Brown, Happy Mondays’ Rowetta, The Charlatans' Tim Burgess and Oasis' Liam Gallagher.

Update: U2 In The Studio, Record New Charity Single

U2 is currently in a Dublin studio recording their follow-up to 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb with producer Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. Previous writing and recording sessions for the new album have already taken the crew to France and Morocco.

"There's so much material," Lanois told Billboard.com. "When you get Eno and I and those guys in the room, before lunch there's like eight things." Rumors have been circling that the band has enough new material for two albums.

"We've had some exciting beginnings via jam sessions," Lanois explains of the writing process. "Now we will pick our favorite beginnings and say, 'OK, that's a lovely springboard. Now what are we trying to say?' The springboards are sometimes melodic, sometimes riff-based, but I can assure you they are exciting."

Also out this week is the U2 charity single "The Ballad of Ronnie Drew," remembering the Irish musician. The track was written by Bono, the Edge, Simon Carmody and Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter, while the single is performed in collaboration between U2, Kila, The Dubliners and "A Band of Bowsies" - Christy Moore, Shane MacGowan, Damien Dempsey, Andrea Corr, Sinead O'Connor and Moya Brennan. The track will only be available in Ireland and all proceeds go towards the Irish Cancer Society.

Winehouse's Husband Hussling Heroin Behind Bars

In the most bizarre twist in the Amy Winehouse saga comes news of how her incarcerated husband Blake Fielder-Civil has been trading autographed photos of the singer for heroin while behind bars.

Fielder-Civil suffered an overdose after reportedly taking a mixture of heroin and something else that was toxic.

According to a source, “He’ll take orders from other inmates then ask Amy to bring in signed photos of herself during visits. He usually gets her to write a little personalized note to make it look authentic. Once he’s back on the wing he’ll swap these for Joeys (slang for a hit of heroin worth a few pounds.)

“The boys think they’ll get a few quid for them on eBay. It’s not clear whether she knows exactly what’s going on . . . but she must find it strange that all these so-called prison hardmen have suddenly become starstruck Amy Winehouse fans.”

Winehouse has been keeping a low profile since leaving rehab a little over a week ago.

Judge Deciding Fate of McCartney/Mills Divorce

Paul McCartney and his estranged wife, the one-legged gold-digger Heather Mills, have failed to reach a settlement in their divorce. The two, who spent most of last week in court negotiating their divorce but to no avail, will now have a high court judge decide how much of McCartney's estimated $1.7 billion Mills will receive.

McCartney had reportedly settled on $50 million, but Mills wanted $100 million in an agreement where she would receive about $40 million upfront then $5 million each year till the couple's daughter turned 18. The couple married in 2002, which means that Mils would get about $25 million per year of marriage if the settlement went her way.

McCartney was not present in court today, while Mills, who is representing herself in the case was. McCartney is believed to be rehearsing for the Brit Awards taking place this Wednesday in London, where he will also be honored with an Outstanding Contribution To Music award. "I don't really like Lifetime Achievement awards," McCartney told BBC, "because you feel as like you're going to stop any second. Mid-Life Crisis award I wouldn't mind. Outstanding Contribution is all right. It sounds like I've made a big donation to somebody so it's great. It's really lovely and getting any award is special but the Brits is even more."

To bad the big donation he will be giving Mills, has no award value.

If you are a fan of Eddie Vedder's solo work, more recently his score for the Sean Penn-directed film Into the Wild, then you'll want a ticket for Vedder's mini tour this spring. Vedder, sans Pearl Jam, will head out on the road with his acoustic guitar for stops along the west coast this April. The tour starts in Vancouver, British Columbia on April 2nd and caps off April 15th in San Diego. New Zealand singer-songwriter Liam Finn will open for Vedder. We're pretty sure Vedder, an avid surfer, will be hitting some surf along the coast. Tickets go on sale February 18th via a pre-sale for Pearl Jam's Ten Club members, while the general public gets a chance at them Friday, February 22nd at 10am PST through Ticketmaster.com.

A limited edition of Vedder's "Into the Wild" LP including a bonus 7" single was released recently. It is still available here. Vedder will reunite with Pearl Jam this summer when the band headlines the Bonnaroo music festival, June 12th-15th outside of Nashville, TN.

Eddie Vedder solo tour dates:
Apr 02 Vancouver, BC The Centre
Apr 05 Santa Cruz, CA SC Civic Auditorium

Feist Talks "1234" Apple Commercial, MAD TV Pokes Fun

Feist was nominated for four Grammy Awards and has won multiple Juno Awards, prizes she calls "for the parents." She's had quite a year thanks to the extra attention she got from being featured in one of Apple's commercials for its iPod Nano.

Speaking with BBC News, Leslie Feist admitted she had no idea the impact the Apple iPod Nano add featuring her "1234" tune would have.

"I felt a definite shift," Feist told the network. "It seemed to pique a lot of curiosity which luckily led back to an album and video that I believe in. It just shows you the power of that kind of thing, as opposed to some preconceived marketing ploy."

"It was just something I'd already made, it already existed and someone reputable put it on the television. And the response to it was very healthy, it felt natural, and really it was not a hard decision to make."

"I was a little naive as to the impact it would have because I really didn't have any idea it would be like that. But it did me nothing but favors because I've continued doing what I do, but with so many new open ears from so many more people than there were before. "

Feist also admits that she also saw a negative side to all the attention from the Nano commercial.

"If anything there was fear," Feist said of the overwhelming response. "I had total naivety, I didn't project what it could be. I just thought that I made this video with my friends and I really loved it."

"Once it came out and the response happened, that's when a little bit of apprehension kicked in. I thought, in a way it's my worst nightmare to have people at the concert twiddling their thumbs waiting for the one song that they recognize."

"But any of those fears were quickly assuaged when I realized that would only happen if I stopped dead in my tracks and didn't do another thing in my life - then it would become my epitaph. That's not the case, it was so long ago that I even forget it really happened."

As for any other negative feedback on Feist's commercialization, Mad TV made this sketch that pokes more fun at Apple than Feist.

MAD TV

For the full BBC News interview head here.

Michael Jackson Promises "Much More To Come"

In a rare recorded video message to fans, Michael Jackson thanked and assured his fans.

Humbled Jackson said, "To be able to say that Thriller still holds the record as the biggest selling album of all time is just mind-blowing. I have you, my fans throughout the world, to thank for this achievement." The video could be considered shameless self promotion, since today also marks the release of the 25th Anniversary edition of Thriller. The re-release features bonus remixes by Kanye West, Fergie, Akon, and Will.I.Am.

"My passion for music has never stopped," Jackson continues in the video. "It's my hope that Thriller continues to live on for each new generation to discover."

Before ending the message, Jackson left us with these curious words: "There is still much more to come for Michael Jackson." A new album? Tour? A residency at the Colosseum at Ceasers Palace, Las Vegas? What?

Jazz/Soul Singer Shuns Winehouse Grammy Victory

Natalie Cole has fired off some words at newly crowned five-time Grammy champ Amy Winehouse. (Winehouse recently tied with with Lauryn Hill, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and the Dixie Chicks for the most awards won by a female artist at the Grammys.) Cole a Grammy winner herself, and the daughter of singer Nat King Cole doesn't believe that Winehouse should have been awarded the trophies because she is an awful role model.

“I don't think she should have won," Cole told People magazine. “It sends a bad message to young people trying to get into this business, trying to do it right and keep themselves together."

“We have to stop rewarding bad behavior. I think she is gifted, her performance was fine. I just feel she's stepping into a place she hasn't earned yet."

“She could die. This isn't something that's cute and fun to throw around in the press. Those of us who have been in the business long enough know the sacrifice it takes. You don't just get to do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded.”

Cole isn't one to talk. She has dealt with her own demons in the past. In the eighties her career was put on hold while she managed drug problems of her own. Cole has also admitted to taking LSD, heroin and cocaine in the past. One would think she would be lending her support.

Cole's last album was 2006's Leavin' which only climbed to Number 97 on the chart. Winehouse's Back To Black, however, peaked at Number Six. Perhaps there's some bitterness.

Paul McCartney Heads Into Divorce Settlement

Wondering why Paul McCartney was a no-show at the Grammy' this past Sunday. Turns out Macca, was in the UK preparing for his first day in a week long settlement case to his divorce to Heather Mills.

McCartney arrived fifteen minutes before the hearing was to start. Unlike the US, the hearing is extremely private and no media are allowed in the courtroom for the proceedings.

This divorce case can prove to be one of the biggest settlements ever. McCartney has some 1.6 billion in his estate, and anywhere from 100 to 200 million is expected to go to the gold digger Heather Mills.

Reports claim that McCartney offered his ex-wife around $50 million, btu she demanded double that.

The artist behind the faces of Gorillaz' 2D, Noodle, Russel Hobbs and Murdoc Niccals is creating a new TV show for the BBC. Gorillaz creator Jamie Hewlett, also co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl, is producing a 60-minute special BBC 3 called Phoo Action.

Based on characters created by Hewlett for The Face comic strip Get The Freebies, "Phoo Action is set in 2012, when London is in the grip of mutant criminals, The Freebies. Only Terry Phoo, a hapless Buddhist kung-fu cop, and unruly teenage heroine Whitey Action, the daughter of Police Chief Benjamin Benson, can save the nation."

The show airs on BBC February 12th at 8PM. A preview for the show, which is not animated, can be viewed on the show's MySpace page or below.

Britney Spears Out Of Mental Hospital

We're going to make this one short and sweet. Britney Spears was released from the UCLA Medical Center's psych ward on yesterday Wednesday, after a little less than a week of treatment. Instead of heading home to avoid the media and paparazzi, Spears checked into the Beverly Hills Hotel with her boyfriend and paparazzi Adnan Ghalib, proving more so than not that she is still in dire need of some medical attention.

Her parents who reportedly have legal documents over her have released this statement to the general public.

"As parents of an adult child in the throws of a mental health crisis, we were extremely disappointed this morning to learn that over the recommendation of her treating psychiatrist, our daughter Britney was released from the hospital that could best care for her and keep her safe. We are deeply concerned about our daughter's safety and vulnerability and we believe her life is presently at risk. There are conservatorship orders in place created to protect our daughter that are being blatantly disregarded. We ask only that the court's orders be enforced so that a tragedy may be averted."

Keys Reclaims Number One, Mars Volta Open At Number Three

Alicia Keys regained her Number One spot on the Billboard Top 200 after selling 61,000 copies of her J Records release As I Am last week. The week before Keys was dethroned by the Juno CD. This week the comedy's soundtrack falls to Number Two after selling 55,000 copies.

But it was a HUGE week for the lads of the Mars Volta, who sold 54,000 copies of their new album The Bedlam At Goliath to land at Number Three. This marks the Mars Volta best charting week ever. 2005's Frances the Mute, while selling more albums, only reached Number Four and 2006's Amputechture didn't do much better settling at Number Nine its debut week out.

Metal act Bullet For My Valentine's new album Scream Aim Fire sold 53,000 copies to take Number Four, while the mellower 2008 Grammy Nominees compilation - featuring Feist, Amy Winehouse, Maroon 5, Kanye West and Herbie Hancock - bowed at Number Five after selling 50,000 albums.

Mary J. Blige, who herself has a big Grammy weekend ahead of her, sold 47,000 copies of her latest Growing Pains to land at Number Six. A new Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana album bows at Number Seven. Hannah Montana 2: Non-Stop Dance Party sold 40,000 copies thanks to the premiere of Cyrus' Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour film, which made $31 million at the box office this week.

Keyshia Cole's Just Like You follows at Number Eight (36,000), while Taylor Swift's self-titled debut falls three spots to Number Nine (36,000). At Number Ten this week rests the other Miley Cyrus/ Hannah Montana classic, Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus, which sold 35,000 copies.

For curious minds, Vampire Weekend's self-titled debut debuted at Number Seventeen after much hype. Not bad for prep-sters.

Bright Eyes, M.Ward Rally For Obama

Indie rockers Bright Eyes and M. Ward will headline a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Obama who is trailing closely behind fellow Democratic presidential candidate Hilary Clinton after Super Tuesday's caucuses, hopes to recruit voters for the Nebraska democratic caucus on February 9th.

Joining M.Ward and Bright Eyes for the show will be Jim Ward of Sparta and Secret Life of Sparrows.

The rally will take place at the Saddle Creek-owned Slowdown, a 625-capacity club in Omaha, Nebraska where two tickets per person max were given away yesterday to those registered to vote or those who signed a pledge card in support of Obama.

This is not the first time Bright Eyes rallied for Obama. Conor Oberst performed at a Obama rally in Iowa last month. Grateful Dead, Will.I.Am, OK Go and members of Pearl Jam have also showed their support for Barack Obama.

Foo Fighters Inviting Fans For Outdoor Grammy Performance

I usually won't post stories about bands looking for fans for their next video shoot, but this is different because you get to go to the Grammys...sort of.

According to the band's newsletter, "The Foo Fighters are offering their fans a chance to be in the audience for an exclusive outdoor performance to be broadcast live at this year's Grammy Awards on Sunday, February 10th on CBS." That actually does sound like a fun way to spend a Sunday.

To enter fans must email their full name, age, phone number and email address to: rsvpfoofighters@sammusicbiz.com

Winners get a pair of tickets to the event, but some restrictions apply. I would do it if I was in LA. (It's the Grammys and the producers always think of something crazy. Led Zeppelin's John Paul Jones is already playing with the Foos. What if the Grammys get all crazy with their money and enlist all of Led Zeppelin. I'm just saying, you never know.)

Some restrictions do apply:

-You and your guest MUST be available to be in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, February 10th from 1pm -9pm
-You and your guest MUST be at least 18 years of age.

Justin Timberlake, LL Cool J & More Sell Out In Super Bowl Ads

The corporate hoopla that is the Super Bowl calls for some entertaining commercials, with companies paying more than $2.5 million for 30 seconds. Some 90+ viewers tuned into last night's match between the New York Giants and New England Patriots. While cameramen found celebrities in the stands, a lot more, especially recording artists showed up in the ads between Tom Brady and Eli Manning getting sacked.

Pepsi who pioneered the pop star commercial back in 1980 with this one featuring Michael Jackson, continued its legacy. This year the soda enlisted a slew of musicians including Justin Timberlake, Missy Elliot, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Macy Gray for cameos.

Madonna and Shakira syndicated some footage for a hair product ad. While Jackson's "Thriller" showed up in a (lame) ad for Life Water, with lizards doing the famed music video's signature dance moves.
