Cachao, Creator Of Mambo, Dies At 89

Cuban bass player Israel Lopez "Cachao," known as one of the creators of the mambo has died due to kidney failure. He was 89.In 1930s Cuba, Lopez with the help of his brother Orestes composed the piece "Danzon Mambo," which heralded the mambo revolution, later carried out by Damaso Perez Prado.Cachao would then live his life in obscurity, until being rediscovered by actor Andy Garcia. Garcia produced Cachao's Master Sessions, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. He also brought Cachao to the silver screen in the documentary Cachao: Como Su Ritmo No Hay Otro.Later in his life, Cachao moved to the U.S. where he recorded Emilio Estefan's Crescent Moon Records, appearing on on Gloria Estefan's album 90 Millas. He had more recently been signed on by label/management Eventus.
