Fats Domino Named "American Music Legend" By RIAA

Posted over 2 years ago
On Monday, Fats Domino became the second recipient of the Recording Industry Association of America's "American Music Legend" award. The late Johnny Cash is the only other musician to be honored with the award recognizing a musician's imprint on American music as undeniable and invaluable.Last night in New Orleans friends and family of Domino gathered to present the 79 year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer with 20 replicas of his gold albums. Domino survived Hurricane Katrina two years ago, but lost many of his belongings due to the heavy flooding in his 9th Ward home."We all lost a lot, but he had more to lose. His career was a lot longer and a lot bigger than any of ours," friend and NOLA jazz artist Irma Thomas said of Domino's ordeal. Some of the recovered albums include Going to the River, Blue Monday, Valley of Tears, Blueberry Hill, Whole Lotta Loving and I Want to Walk You Home. The Tipitina's Foundation, dedicated to helping NOLA musicians find housing and new instruments in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, is helping rebuild Domino's home too.
