It's a sad day for nerds everywhere. JD Salinger has passed away at the age of 91. He's hugely impacted the lit world, but his work also resonated with a wide array of musicians. In tribute to Salinger, here are some songs and their accompanying music videos that were inspired by Salinger and Catcher in the Rye.
Green Day "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?"
The book is one of Billie Joe Armstrong's favorites.
Guns N' Roses "Catcher in the Rye"
She & Him "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?"
Zooey Deschanel is named after the title character from Salinger's Franny and Zooey.
The Lawrence Arms "The Disaster March"
"I was frustrated and angry. I was more than alive. A catcher in the rye."
A Scissors "Hey Franny, It's Zooey"

....It is amazing the impact J.D.Salinger has had on our culture. His slim works poke & probe so innocuously, so stealthily........."Catcher In The Rye" particularly has recuring cameos in the narrative of the last 40 or so years.

Would never forgive myself if I didn't include the song with the first Salinger reference in hip-hop history:

Farther off, Bill Callahan / Smog invokes the author's name in a line that seems to fit Holden Caulfield:
"You think about J.D.
and why he had to leave"
