First of all I would just like to say this is my first MOG- no, no, my first ever blog. Ever. Why? Not sure- I love to write. Maybe I'm just shy. Maybe. Well, there is a band I'm curious about and I've come to rely on this MOG community. Lets see if I can get my radar out of abysmal or irrelevant or whatever level it is at right now. The topic at hand- Shiny Toy Guns. I came across this band by accident. I work in music circles so I actually stumble across many bands in this manner. Something caught my attention however when listening to the song Le Disko. Perhaps it was the succesful stylistic combination of punk, rock, and, well, disco. The lead singer is a woman- also another unusual (but thankfully growing) quality for a band of this genre. After a bit of research I realized quickly that the major corporate pop culture giants think they may be the next big thing. They've got songs on TV soundtracks and are doing the late night TV rounds. MTV is doing a college concert with them and they have been featured on most of the mainstream online music sites. The MySpace site has gazzillions of hits, plays, and downloads. They also have Hot Topic as a corporate sponsor, which I'm not quite sure what to make of. But here's the catch. At least in my city they have no radio play-none. They have a show here in 5 days and the ticket sales are incredibly low. I don't know what sales in other cities have been. So what's the deal? Are they the next big thing? Who are the fans- people that shop at Hot Topic? Has anyone seen a live show? What's the word from the MOG community?
